Liu Sheng Zhe (刘聖者) aka Liu Jiang Jun (刘將軍) or General Liu, born in Pre-Song Dynasty (生于宋朝前五國十代), hometown in Hokkien Province Fu Zhou City (家鄉於福建省福州市), in some contexts, he was being recorded as a Spiritual Master from Jiao Zhi Kingdom (跤趾國) – which is today’s Vietnam (現今越南).
As recorded, his real name was known as Liu Zhi Da (劉志達) or Liu Wu Xiu (劉武秀). Due to him having some Spiritual relationship with Zhang Gong Fa Zhu (張公法主), in later part of the History, a lot of folks tend to acknowledge him as Zhang Gong Fa Zhu's sworn-brother (被后人誤會為張公法主之結義兄弟刘公聖君).
After growing up, Liu Zhi Da made vows to minimize sufferings that the folks encountered, Liu Zhi Da went around seeking master-ship under Spiritual Masters. Soon, he came to Mt Qi Tai (七台山), from then, he stayed at the Mountain to do his self-cultivation.
After knowing that Zhang Gong Sheng Jun was an Upright person and a person who volunteered to assist the needy, Liu Zhi Da approached Zhang Gong Sheng Jun in assisting him in the providing of assistance to the folks (at the time of Liu Zhi Da approached Zhang Gong Sheng Jun, Liu Zhi Da was already a cultivated person with an age of 180-200 years older than Zhang Gong Sheng Jun).
One year, during the subduing of demons in the City where they stayed in, Liu Zhi Da scarified himself and from then, he was being honoured as one of the Proetectors known as Liu Sheng Zhe of the Hokkien Fu Zhou Clan.
According to records, after Buddhism entered China, another Traditional Sect from India came into China too. This Traditional Sect was known as Yoga Sect (Yu Jia Jiao 瑜伽教).
In order for the new teaching of Yoga Sect to spread around among the folks, the non-Chinese Sect imported Liu Sheng Zhe into the Sect as one of its Founder, from then, Zhang Sheng Zhe was also known as the Spiritual Master of a non-Chinese Sect.
This was the reason why for the outlook of the statue of Liu Sheng Zhe or Liu Gong to be in standing position and having a strange hand gesture. The hand gesture is a hand formation of the Yoga Sect.

ReplyDeleteIts ok, this wont get into much conflict, cos when you are doing the invitation, you are only inviting the Zhang Xiao Liu Lian group and not the Lei Zhen Zi group.

ReplyDeleteHahahaha, this is the mistakes that alot of Folks tend to make, if we will to go thru the records on the various Sheng Zhe and Sheng Jun, they belongs to different era or periods.
ReplyDeleteZhang Xiao Liu Lian in the Five Camps dont really have direct association with Zhang Gong Sheng Jun.

ReplyDeleteHahahaha, this depend, cos different Priests will have different set of Mantras, but never ppl will invite the Lei Zhen Zi group, cos till today, no one got the Mantras for them.

ReplyDeleteTo be more accurate, the General Li in the Zhang Xiao Liu Lian is not Li Na Zha, cos Li Na Zha is not a Taoist Deity. In that Set, General Li is another General in one of the Taoist Sect.
ReplyDeleteWhereas in Lei Zhen Zi's set, they are all Characters from the Creation of Deities, so Li Na Zha is included.
which general li is in zhang xiao liu lian , u mean lei zhen zi set is not the actually 5 camp general is a creation of ppl , but now almost all temples use the lei zhen zi set . is this wrong ?
ReplyDeleteGeneral, name varies in different areas, so till today, a no standard name is given to the General Li in the Zhang Xiao Liu Lian set.
ReplyDeleteAs for Lei Zhen Zi set, everyone knew that the classic is a made-up one, just that, some of the Deities in there are real Taoist Deities,
As for the Five Camp Theory, it only exist after the Classic is being spread around in the Folks Culture, before that, no such thing as Five Camps, etc.
Can you provide postings for Lian Gong, Ma Ye and Hu Ye of the 36 Generals?
