The different Bestowed Titles of the Five Ranking of Lord Cheng Huang

In Taoism, Cheng Huang can easily be categorised as Five Level/Ranking (五階官):

1) Du Cheng Huang aka Jing Cheng Huang (都城隍/京城隍) - given the title King, in Chinese Wang (王)

Official Title: Ming Ling Wang (明靈王)

And to be accurate, in the Whole Chinese Deities System, there can be only one Du Cheng Huang which is in the Imperial Capital of Ancient China 帝都 (which now got no more).

2) Fu Cheng Huang (府城隍) - given the title Duke/Lord (公)

Official Title: Wei Ling Gong (威靈公)

3) Zhou Cheng Huang (州城隍) - given the title Marquis (侯)

Official Title: Sui Jing Hou (綏靖侯)

4) Xian Cheng Huang (縣城隍) - given the title Bo as of Sire (伯)

Official Title: Xian You Bo (顯佑伯)

5) Cheng (as in City or an Area) Cheng Huang (城城隍) - folks addressed him with the title Ye (Officer/Magistrate)

Official Title: Cheng Huang Ye (城隍爺)

甲午馬年福建城隍周苛公聖誕吉慶 Manifestation Anniversary of Hokkien Cheng Huang 2014

On 22^nd Day of Lunar 5 Month (農曆五月廿二日), it is considered as the Manifestation Anniversary of Hokkien Province Cheng Huang  福建省城隍).

For Year 2014, it falls on 19 Jun, a Thursday.

甲午馬年天下都城隍楊繼盛公聖誕吉慶 Manifestation Anniversary of Du Cheng Huang 2014

On 11th Day of Lunar 5 Month (農曆五月十一日), it is considered as the Manifestation Anniversary of Du Cheng Huang aka Overall In-charge of City Deity (天下都城隍).

知多一點點 Knowing More;

楊繼盛（1516年－1555年），字仲芳，號椒山，追諡忠愍。北直隸容城縣人，明代後期官員。著有《杨忠愍文集》。因彈劾嚴嵩而死，被奉为北京城的城隍﹐既是天下都城隍。

楊繼盛為嘉靖二十六年（1547年）丁未科進士。他生性鯁直，剛正不阿。任兵部員外郎時，韃靼首領俺答數次入寇，咸寧侯仇鸞請開馬市以和之，楊繼盛上書《請罷馬市疏》，力言仇鸞之舉有“十不可五謬”，嚴嵩庇護仇鸞，繼盛坐貶狄道（今甘肃临洮县）典史。楊繼盛在狄道開辦學校，選了一百多名孩子上學，其妻張貞變賣珠寶首飾，作學校的經費。一年後，俺答依然擾邊，马市全遭破坏。明世宗知繼盛有先見之明，再度起用楊繼盛，调为山东诸城县令，改任南京户部主事、刑部员外郎、兵部武选司，连迁四职。

嘉靖三十二年（1553年），楊繼盛以《請誅賊臣疏》彈劾嚴嵩，歷數嚴嵩「五奸十大罪」，嚴嵩反冠以“詐稱親王令旨”的罪名下錦衣衛獄，廷杖一百，有人送與蚺蛇膽一具，說是可解血毒，楊繼盛拒絕，曰：“椒山自有膽，何蚺蛇為？”後楊繼盛於獄中自行割下爛肉三觔，斷筋二條，受盡三年折磨。

嘉靖三十四年（1555年）十月初一，嚴嵩授意刑部尚書何鰲，將繼盛與閩浙總督張經、浙江巡撫李天寵、蘇松副總兵湯克寬等九人處決，棄屍於市，臨刑有詩曰：“浩氣還太虛，丹心照千古。生平未報國，留作忠魂補。」，繼盛妻殉夫自縊。

燕京士民敬而憫之，以繼盛故宅，改廟以奉，尊為城隍，並以其妻配祀。死後十二年，穆宗立，追諡忠愍。「杨椒山祠」位于北京市西城区达智桥胡同十二号，为杨继盛故居。祠内有谏草堂，堂内石碑上刻杨两次批评朝政的谏言草稿。

Scroll of Cheng Huang & his 12 Recording Officers (城隍尊神與十二記錄司官)

In here, you all will be seeing a Scroll-painting of Cheng Huang aka City Deity and his 12 Recording Officers.

Usually this Scroll is being used in Rituals/Ceremonies associated with Passing-on or Salvation.

According to Records, these 12 Officers will travelled around the Mortal Realm to do recording and then submit the Records to Cheng Huang for vetting, besides that, such Officers will also assist Cheng Huang in summoning of Souls of Passing-on Mortals for reporting to the Cheng Huang Department.

Manifestation Anniversary of Du Cheng Huang (都城隍明靈王聖誕吉慶)

11th Day of Lunar 5 Month is considered as the Manifestation Anniversary of Du Cheng Huang aka City Deity of the Capital. In Taoism, he got an Official Title of Ming Ling Wang aka Duke Ming Ling (明靈王).

In Singapore, oneself is able to pay respect to Ming Ling Wang in Du Cheng Huang Temple (都城隍廟) located at Tanjong Pagar or Dong Yue Temple (東嶽廟) located at Bukit Purmei.

Honouring Cheng Huang at Du Cheng Huang Temple (都城隍廟祭明靈王)

Today, the 10th Day of Lunar 5 Month, me and one of the Long Shan Men's Disciples visited Du Cheng Huang Temple (都城隍廟) located at Tanjong Pagar to pay our respect to Du Cheng Huang aka Ming Ling Wang (都城隍明靈王).

Upon arrival, the Altar was already full with Fruits & Paper Offerings. After a quick preparation & laying out of our Offerings, we started to pay our respect to Du Cheng Huang Ming Ling Wang.

Due to the Temple was a bit small and crowded, we had to make our leave straight after the Honouring.

Outside the Temple, Hokkien Opera was going on with only An audience. This shows that, our Chinese Culture really need some Boosting.

On 11th Day of Lunar 5 Month (03 Jun 2009), it will be the Actual Manifestation Anniversary of Du Cheng Huang, for those who are interested, remember to drop by to pay your respect.

The Celebration will last till Friday (but actual will last their Sunday).

Pictures of Hokkien Province Du Cheng Huang Temple (福建福州都城隍廟)

Fu Jian Du Cheng Huang Temple (福建福州都城隍廟), one of the few Ancient Cheng Huang Temples that had been well-preserved till today.

According to records, Fu Jian Du Cheng Huang Temple was built in AD282, in Jin Dynasty. For the past 1700 odd years, Fu Jian Du Cheng Huang Temple went thru 6 Renovations (AD1157, AD1178, AD1482, AD1515, AD1582 & AD1748).

According to the Fu Jian Recording Text, this Du Cheng Huang Temple was built dedicating to Western Han Dynasty Officer Zhou Ke (西漢禦史周苛), who was a Upright & Loyal Officer which later being cooked alive by Xiang Yu (項羽). In order to memory the Uprightness of Zhou Ke, after his death, the Han People built a Temple dedicating to him.

Even though this Temple was bestowed with the Title Du Cheng Huang (都城隍 1st Grade) but actually, it was only the Sheng Cheng Huang (省城隍 2nd Grade - Hokkien Province is known as Sheng and not Du - Capital).

Due to the misuderstanding in the Ancient Era, the Title was being used till today.
In South East Asia today, most of the Du Cheng Huang Temples actually got their Lineage from this Fu Jian Du Cheng Huang Temple.

In Pic 05 & 06, you will see the 12 3rd Grade Cheng Huang (閩州十二府城隍) being drawn on the Wall. These 12 3rd Grade Cheng Huang were supervise by the Cheng Huang in Fu Jian Du Cheng Huang Temple.

Introduction of Lord Cheng Huang (水庸防堤城隍爺)

 

Lord Cheng Huang (城隍公) aka Duke Cheng Huang (城隍侯) or Cheng Huang Ye (城隍爺) /Cheng Huang Shen (城隍神), a Deity who is being appointed as the Officer of doing registration of Life and Death in the Mortal World (人間注生死).

In the Ancient period, each area/city in China will need to dedicate a Temple to Cheng Huang, in-order to get the blessing and necessary looking-after by the Deities.

In some era, Cheng Huang also act as a "media" for people to make complaints (證紛爭), witnesses of Divorce and Marriage or some (證婚姻), giving birth (證生), etc.

In Taoism, Cheng Huang can easily be categorize as Five Level (五階官):

靈寶天尊。安慰身形。

惡口傷人。邪淫奸盜。殺害生靈。致遭罪咎。

世間眾生。受此厄難。何緣得度。

 

(拜) 天尊曰。善哉善哉。下方生人。

皆由城隍申奏。

定數不差。世間若有善信男女。轉讀此經。

三五十遍。以致百千萬遍。即得消除罪業。

安享太平。

 

(拜) 老君曰。其神天地儲精。

山川鍾秀。威靈顯赫。

聖道高明。無黨無偏。公忠正直。有求必應。

如影隨形。代天理物。剪惡除凶。護國保邦。

功施社稷。溥降甘澤。普救生民。

統轄十八真司。

主管百萬神將。積功累行。位正城隍。

權掌天下。威鎮萬邦。真人聞說。

(拜) 主管天下人生死案判官。

(拜) 主管注生子孫案判官。

(拜) 主管立應見報案判官。

(拜) 主管看經修功德案判官。

(拜) 主管風雨龍王案判官。

(拜) 主管億劫魍魎飢鬼案判官。

(拜) 左右金甲侍衛大神。

(拜) 前擁後從神武將軍。

(拜) 執旛金童散花玉女。

(拜) 隍同一切神兵將吏。

 

是時。

城隍哀憫世間一切眾生。或有年災月厄。

命運蹇滯。天羅地網。鰥寡孤獨。瘟災疫癘。

瘡腫疥癩。官非口舌。剋乏後嗣。刀兵水火。

盜賊生產。一切厄難。若誦此經。

吾當速遣行瘟使者。

收瘟聖眾。即除罪簿。永滅惡根。

 

於是。

真人再告天尊曰。世間若有善男子。善女人。

廣濟陰功。行諸方便。施財周急。愛老憐貧。

欽此三寶。孝養父母。忠於君王。愛惜衣食。

和同六親。不作非為。持齋奉道。善籍標名。

丹臺註善。增延福壽。世代榮昌。子嗣綿永。

世世不絕。

 

(拜) 天尊曰。

城隍尊神。威權實重。顯化無邊。

禱雨則甘霖蘇稿。

禾稼成熟。祈晴則化陰成陽。應時朗齌。

若有善男子。善女人。一心專志。念道思真。

但於三元八節。諸神聖誕。朔望之期。

本命良辰。持齋誦經。作種種功德。

即得見世安樂。增長福田。

門昌族貴。光顯安榮。官階進崇高之職。

商賈增阜盛之財。舟航無波浪之驚。

陸程有妥安之美。凡在塵壤。悉歸統制。

於是天尊而說偈曰：

 

大哉城隍。實天生德。虹流華渚。山嶽降靈。

承天稟命。統制萬邦。主判生死。報應分明。

賞善罰惡。不爽毫分。明同日月。德並乾坤。

皇都肅靖。奸詭不生。救災拔難。佑國康民。

大都乾地。廟貌尊嚴。國崇祀典。禮儀精煙。

天下欽敬。率土歸心。禦災捍患。永鎮八方。

香膏綿永。億萬斯春。

 

天尊說是偈已。惟見龍輿鶴駕。迎歸碧落之天。

萬聖千真。各迴雲霄之內。城隍上聖。

頓首拜辭。

留此真經。下傳世間。流通讀誦。若遵經旨。

受福無窮。諸神歡悅。信受奉行。
