Wu Gui aka The Five Ghostly Souls/Spirits, in some contexts, they are addressed as The Five Ghostly Generals.

In Taoism, there are 2 sets of Wu Gui being recorded, which 1 of the sets belongs to the Folks Culture.

And so, who are they?

According to records, the Initial set consists of the following Five Souls/Spirits:

Dou Ren (竇仁)
Li Kai (李凱)
Zhang Wu (張五)
Shi Tai (十泰)
Chu Mian (褚免)

Mao Shan Feng Yang Lineage Record (茅山鳳陽派系記錄):

East Direction: Chen Gui Xian (東方陳貴先)
South Direction: Zhang Zi Gui (南方張子貴)
West Direction: Cai Zi Liang (西方蔡子良)
North Direction: Lin Jing Zhong (北方林敬忠)
Central: Yao Bi Song (中央姚碧鬆)

And the Folks Culture set consists of the following Five Souls/Spirits:

Green Ghost Wei De (青面獠牙鬼魏得)
Red Ghost Jin Cai (紅面獠牙鬼晉財)
Black Ghost Xiao Zan (黑面獠牙鬼蕭贊)
Blue Ghost Chang Yong (藍面獠牙鬼常擁)
Flower Ghost Guan Qian (玉/花面獠牙鬼管錢)

So what are they summoned for?

For the 1st Set, usually in some Taoist Spiritual Skills, they are being summoned to do the checking of information and making certain things to happen without the Official permission from the Deities of the Three Realms (eg: Un-authorized Spiritual Masters, Leaders, etc).

And this is why, for Upright Taoist Culture, this is one of the Skills that a Cultivation Person shall avoid.

For the 2nd Set, usually used by the Folks Culture Spiritual People to assist the Mortals to gain wealth and fulfilled un-necessary requests (eg: Fake mediums, some Un-official Geomancy Masters, etc).

Due to these Five Ghostly Souls/Spirits are not Enlighten Beings, once a request is being fulfilled, the Mortals will needed to repay back with certain in-returns that usually the Mortals wont know till the day is due.

Till today, a lot of the un-orthodox Schools (including some claimed Orthodox School) still summoned the 2 Sets of Five Ghostly Souls/Spirits to assist the Spiritual People to gain whatever they used to gain or summoned them to make things work in-order for devotees or the followers to believe in them, etc.

In Taoism, we do have a few sets of Spiritual Skills to send/get-rid-of these 2 sets of Five Ghostly Souls/Spirits away. Usually once these Five Souls/Spirits are being sent off by using the Spiritual Skills, the person who owned them will be punished in a way that he/she cannot withstand.

Last of all, just a kind advise: if one self is keen in Promoting the Upright Culture of Taoism or assisting the Needy, one self shall go through the long path of Cultivation to reach the Cultivated Level to assist the others.

Do not encourage anyone that need assistances to consult any one who honoured these Five Ghostly Souls/Spirits. Once consulted, the consequences can be more serious that what oneself can handle with.
