Pictures of Dong Yue Da Di (天齊仁聖東嶽大帝)

Dong Yue Da Di (東嶽大帝) aka Lord Emperor of Mt Tai, in chinese, we also addressed him as Dong Yue Da Di (東岳大帝) or Tai Shen Shen (泰山神), Official Title for Dong Yu Da Di is Tai Shan Tian Qi Ren Sheng Da Di (泰山天齊仁聖大帝).

According to his position as the Eastern Mountain Lord of the total of the 5 Main Mountains (五岳) and with the element of East (東方), he was being appointed as one of the High Ranking Deities that were able to set/arrange for one's Life and Death 注生死 (and this is why he's being closely associated with the Deities of the Hade).

In some contexts, he's consider as the "Main Boss" of all the Hade Deities (陰司神祇) besides Feng Du Da Di (酆都大帝) - till today, a lot of people still cant differentiate Dong Yu and Feng Du.

The Origin of Dong Yu Da Di (東嶽大帝由來)

In Chinese Deities System, there's 2 saying on Dong Yu's origin, here they are:

1) He's the descedant of Lord Pan Gu (盤古大帝) - the one who open-up Heaven and Earth, named as Jin Hong Shi 金虹氏 (Brother of Dong Hua Di Jun 東華帝君).

2) He was Wu Cheng Wang Huang Fei Hu (武成王黃飛虎) - a General in Shang Dynasty (商朝大將), after he passed-away, he was being appointed as Dong Yu Da Di to look after the issues that were related to all movements of the Mountains, Hills and the Life and Death issues of all Living Beings.

  3. Dong Yu Da Di, a Heavenly Deity that is being appointed the task of looking after the Life and Death issues.

    Eventhough he's being appointed as the In-charge of all the Life and Death of the Living Beings, this doesnt mean that he belongs to the Nether World, this is one of the serious mistake that alot of people made nowadays.

    Whereas Feng Du Da Di is consider as one of the Nether World Deities, etc.

    Dong Yu Da Di has never stay in the Nether World, but staying around in the Zhong Jie (which is consider as the Mortal World) to do inspection on all issues happened in this Realm.

    Shi Tai Bao, yes, they are given the title Dong Yu Shi Tai Bao, but actually they have more tasks to perform and look into then just staying at Dong Yu Da Di's department.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    As for the addressing, in the past, we address him as Dong Yue, but later folks change the title to Dong Yu.
    To be more accurate, both titles can be used.
    Hi bro jave, can give more history or detail of Wu Cheng Wang Huang Fei Hu, Thanks.
  6. Hahahaha, whether with or without the Shan on top is still pronouce as Yu, Yue is the one that we used as surname for people, such as Yue Fei - the Song Dynasty Loyal General.
  7. Dear Bro,
    Huang Fei Hu, a General of Shang Dynasty (a History Character, but some claim that he only appeared in Feng Shen Bang), performing his task under the Evil King Zou Wang to fight against the Army Troope of Zhou Wen Wang Ji Chang and Jiang Tai Gong.
    After Zou Wang snatched Fei Hu's wife to the Palace and do nasty things to her, Huang Fei Hu was so disappointed and decided to left the Shang Court and take refuge under Jiang Tai Gong.
    After winning the battle of defeating Zou Wang, Fei Hu was bestowed with the title of Dong Yu Da Di - to look after the issues of Mountains and Hills and also, the Life and Death issues, whereas his 4 nephews (sons of Dong Hua Di Jun) being bestowed as Nan Yu, Xi Yu, Bei Yu and Zhong Yu Da Di (from Feng Shen Bang).
  8. According to Taoist Scripture "Dong Yu Da Sheng Bao Can" 《東嶽大生寶懺》, actually Dong Yu Da Di has 5 Sons, here are the Official Title of the 5 sons/Dong Yu Princes (these titles are being recite during the invitation of all the Deities):
    東嶽上殿至聖威雄炳靈仁惠王
    Dong Yu Shang Dian Zhi Sheng Wei Xiong Bing Ling Ren Hui Wang
    東嶽太子聖嗣祐靈侯
    Dong Yu Tai Zu Sheng Si You Ling Hou
    東嶽太子惠靈侯
    Dong Yu Tai Zi Hui Ling Hou
    東嶽太子靜鑑尊師
    Dong Yu Da Zi Jing Qian Zun Shi
    東嶽太子宣靈侯
    Dong Yu Tai Zi Xuan Ling Hou
  9. use the chinese dictionary (traditional word) and check and when type "yue" den this word appear lei ..(???????)
    ReplyDelete
  10. You cant find this character anymore, cos it's a old character, only Taiwan still using it, in Spore, we only used the normal Yu as in Jail.
    Actually, to be more accurate, we shall used the one with the Shan character on Top, that represents Mountain rather than the one used as Jail.
    ReplyDelete
  11. ??? i saw a lot temples and tuas using it .. like tang ga beo 东嶽庙。。tua wil be dong yue hu shan dian if i not wrong ..
    ReplyDelete
  12. 东嶽庙 -> this is correct one, as for Yue (岳), also can, both are acceptable.
    ReplyDelete
  13. ya .. (岳) comes fr the word 嶽..
  15. I've seen the Wu Yu Da Di (Dong Yu, Nan Yu, Xi Yu, Bei Yu And Zhong Yu Da Di) in Five colored form. Dong Yu Da Di being green, Nan Yu- red, Xi Yu - Flesh colored, Bei Yu- black and Zhong Yu- gold colored. In this situation usually with regards to other deities in five color system the gold one is usually in the middle but since Dong Yu Da Di here is the leader he is in the middle. Is this Correct?
    ReplyDelete
  16. No, as for the color system, actually the folks uses the Five Directional Color System to inplant into the Deities System, so allow them to recognise them easily - Green represent Dong/East, etc...
    In some temples, yes, they will place Dong Yu in the middle to show his high-position, but some dont follow that, they will tend to place the Zhong in the center (according to the Direction Dong Nan Zhong Xi Bei or the other way).
    ReplyDelete
  17. I see thank you very much for the info. Since its the feast day of Bei Yu Da Di tomorrow can I ask what is his primary function/s? Is it the same as Dong Yu Da Di? Thanks in advance. :-)
    ReplyDelete
  18. Bei Yu Da Di got different tasks from Dong Yu.
    Dong Yu can said to be the overall in-charge of all the other Yu, as for Bei Yu, he's given a task of doing the inspections on the movements and all issues that are related to rivers, streams, canals, etc.
  19. Welcome welcome, remember to go pay respect to him tml hor :P
    ReplyDelete
  20. Yup I'll burn lots of paper gold tomorrow! Is he vegetarian or can we also offer meat? Bro, how can we go pay respect to him other than offering incense and paper gold?
    ReplyDelete
  21. Hahahahahaha.. if offering papers to him, then no point paying respect to him.
    For his ranking, offering papers is extra, as long as you have the sincere heart, a piece of paper does make a lot.
    Bring three types of fruits (according to your choice), buy some tea leaves and traditional cookies - jian hup, possible, bring a bottle of white rice wine and some simple papers will do (no need a lot, a stack can liao).
    upon reaching the temple, wash the fruits, place them neatly on the plates, open up the tea leaves and jian hup, place them on the altar, wine can no need to pour, as long as you offer it to him.
    Light 3 joss-sticks (size to ur wish), pay respect to Heaven 1st and then sincerely make ur kneeling infront of the altar, address him by his official title - Bei Yu Da Di, in-order to sound more respectful, you can add a Gong at the end.
    Say why you here and the occasion, after that, make ur request, stand-up, place the joss sticks into the urn by putting the center, follow by right then left.
    Back to the spot where you kneel down, kneel down to make ur respect again, stand-up and make a simple bow and step 3-steps back before leaving the spot.
    After 15mins, you can keep all the offerings and offer ur papers.
    PS: now a lot of temples dont allow meat stuffs, so no need, if you at home, then as your wish la.
    ReplyDelete
  22. Yup sincerity is the major part of any offerings and respect. Thanks a lot. :-)
    ReplyDelete
  23. Welcome welcome, as long as he got ur request, you will be blessed.
    ReplyDelete
  28. Huang Fei Hu is a real Historical Character in Shang Dynasty. He is a loyal Officer but due to the Evil King Zhou, he was being framed.
    In Singapore, you can honour him at Zhen Ren Gong aka Zhen Long Gong located at Redhill Close.
  35. Sifu, how can we differentiate Feng Du from Ti Kong? I just went visited the Yu Huang Shang Ti section of your website, and the two Deities look like twins^^.
    ReplyDelete
  36. Haha, yup, its hard to differentiate unless the painting or statues are made accordingly to the Position/Ranking. And usually from the difference of the Position/Ranking is by looking at the Chair. For Tee Kong, the chair will come with Nine Dragons, whereas Feng Du comes with Five Dragons, same goes to Dong Yue, but Dong Yue usually made with a Gold Face for easy identity.
    ReplyDelete
  37. Saw 武成王黃飛虎 at havelock road teegong tua and they named it 東岳大帝.
    ReplyDelete
  38. Yup, this came from the Myth of Feng Shen Bang.
    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Sifu, Is Dong Yue Ta Ti same as Yen Luo Wang (King of Hell)?
    ReplyDelete
  40. No no, Dong Yue is considered as the Boss of Yan Luo.
