Tai Sui (太歲) aka Lord of the Year and Age (太歲星君), in Chinese, sometime we address him as Dang Nian Tai Sui (當年太歲) or Zhi Nian Tai Sui (值年太歲) – meaning Tai Sui on Duty for that Year (in some context, Tai Sui is known as Jupiter – Mu Xing 木星).
In Taoism, Tai Sui can be considered as a very important Deity. Besides giving the necessary blessing to the Mortals, the different Tai Sui are used to mark the Lunar Year (夏曆農曆年) too.
In whole, for the cycle of the Lunar Year, there are 60 Tai Sui (六十太歲) to look after every individual year. Out of all these 60 Tai Sui, there's an Overall In-charge of all Tai Sui, he's name as Yin Jiao (殷郊) – son of the Evil King Zhou of Shang Dynasty 商朝紂王之子 (with 3 Heads and 6 Arms 生有三頭六臂).
Till today, a lot of people only pay respect or know that there's only 60 Tai Sui, but to be exact, there shall be 61 Tai Sui (nowadays, he is being illustrated as the Little Boy holding the Banner with Dang Nian Tai Sui written on it, etc).
In whole, there are 5 Sets of 60 Tai Sui since the 1st day where our Chinese Ancestors fixed the Lunar Calendar.
The oldest set of 60 Tai Sui had been forgotten by the people and now the one we using might not be that accurate. In-order to get back the oldest set of 60 Tai Sui, you all will have to look back at the Old Lunar Calendar or Tong Shu (老黃曆/通書).

Sigh!, he would be the very one many people would avoid... avoid getting in his way... :-)
ReplyDeleteFor the second mantra, some contexts, they will used for Bei Dou Xing Jun, some contexts, they will used for Tai Sui.
ReplyDeleteSo next time, when you come across that, no need to be susprise. ;P
Hahahahaha, many people thought that way, but actually, the more you avoid, the more easy you get involved or a crash with him.
ReplyDeleteTai Sui, in actually form, is a type of underground living things. whenever we go, we will have a chance of stepping on his head, so... no need to avoid, be upright and meet up with him, maybe you will have another new form of encounter with him.
Wu Liang Shou.
Here's a brief write-up on Underground Tai Sui:

Enjoy.
Thanks, Jave, learning something new each day. :-)
ReplyDeleteWelcome welcome :P
ReplyDeleteThank You very much. It seems like Taoism has found a light that can enlighten others about taoism in you. It is our good fortune to have someone like you who can explain these things to us. Wish you all the best and Wu Liang Shou!!!
ReplyDeleteDear bluelotus18, I'm just performing my task in sharing what I know with all of you here.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are much more Knowledgable Tao Bros out there sharing too.
Me just doing my little part on promoting the culture la.
Million Thanks.
Wu Liang Shou.
bro its me again haha ..
ReplyDeletewanna ask .. the overall in charge of tai sui "yin tai sui " includes in the 60 tai sui or is the one who have been known as the little boy holding the banners ??
secondly .. is he an evil guy .. well i wont say as the son of evil king he will be evil but how he appointed to get this post ?? fong shen bang ??
and also u mention there is 5 sets of tai sui .. does it means to have 60x5 = 300 tai sui in total ??
Yin Tai Sui does not include in the 60, to be more accurate, just like what i posted above, he's the one who being appointed as the Overall In-charge of all the 60 Tai Sui, meaning the Boss or the Leader of the Tai Sui.
ReplyDeleteUsually in the folks context, he's being made into the little Boy form, but actually, he shall be in the 3 Head and 6 Arms form (next time you observe during Taoist Rituals, the Priests will hang his picture on the left side of the San Qing scrolls - some don hang too).
He's is not evil, he's unlike his father. In the story, actually he was being killed by his father due to some reasons, after being killed, his soul was being summoned back by his master and trained him with all the spiritual skills.
5 Sets as not in multiply by 5, but 5 different combination (due to different era, so got different names appeared).
oh okok .. for yin tai sui i understand le ..
ReplyDelete5 combination due to diff era ?? so since when these 60 tai sui being appointed ?? that means some older sets of tai sui was push out and new tai sui inserted inside ??
Bingo, you are right :P
ReplyDeleteActually all these 60 Tai Sui were real historical characters in our Chinese History.
Most of them were well-known characters or famous generals in the past. after they passed-away, the folks or the Imperial Court Heavenly Officers put their name into the records as a form of gratitude or to let the world knew about their credits and merits.
So how are they appointed as the Tai Sui for that year?
1 - by their birthday year
2 - by their death year
3 - by their bestowed year
4 - by their spiritual enlightenment year (not death year, dont mistaken, this can be the year that he appeared somewhere or so-called being summoned to the mortal world, etc).
The above information are not well-known by the others or even the one who published the book on Tai Sui. :P
From what I know, the very first Tai Sui that appear in the Sets can be trace back as far as before Han Dynasty.
oh okok .. i kn that they are historic characters .. so in another words .. from the first time when tai sui appears till now .. there are more den 60 tai sui actually.. its jus that some are being forgotten and some are inserted thats form the exact 60 tai sui now .. can i say in this way ??
ReplyDeleteyup, can say so.. only till these recent yrs, some organisations trying to standardise everything by publishing a book on Tai Sui.
ReplyDeleteHi. Its me again, I want to ask why is it that usually the 60 Tai Sui altars usually have Dou Mu in the middle? And what are the names and significance of the two multi-armed deity flanking Dou Mu? And what kind of being is the Tai sui unearthed before? Is it some kind of fungus or a mineral thingy, looks like planet jupiter to me.
ReplyDeleteDou Mu, is considered as the Mother of all Lord of Stars or the Mother of the Great Dipper of the North in the Heavenly Realm, and like what we discussed before in the other section, all Stars are closely related to the North Pole, as a form of Respect, Dou Mu must be worshipped 1st before paying respect to the other Star Deities (remember, Tai Sui is also consider as a "star" - Jupiter).
ReplyDeleteIn Singapore, we can seldom see the 2 multiple-hand-demon-look-like statues besides Dou Mu, but actually that 2 are a must - with that 2 Deities and the combination of the 7 Lords of the Great Dipper of the North, they form the Nine Emperor Deities (Jiu Huang Da Di).
The official title of the 2 Deities are - Zuo Fu You Bi or Tian You Tian Peng.
In the unearthed Tai Sui, from what the scienctists found out, they must be some form of fungus that wont rot or turn back under room temperature for a long long time.... interesting hor.
Thank you very much. What is the chinese characters for Zuo Fu You Bi or Tian You Tian Peng?
ReplyDelete左輔右弼 or 天佑天篷.
ReplyDeletesingapore got ?? i thought normally beside duo mu is tai yang and tai yin xing jun ?? got pics to share ??
ReplyDeletehahahaha, tai yin tai yang is only one set of deities that stand beside Dou Mu, to be more accurate, shall be Zuo Fu You Bi.
ReplyDeleteIn Spore, no no, you cant find this anywhere, cos not much ppl know abt their existance.
Here's the picture of them standing beside Dou Mu:
wah got their "portfolio" haha ..
ReplyDeleteZuo Fu You Bi are the 2 stars that being "hidden" up in the Great Northern Dipper.
ReplyDeletefrom what being recorded, their position shall be somewhere near to the 1st 4 stars of the 7 stars of the Dipper.
So usually when we recite their secret characters during rituals, the 7 shown stars, we dont recite but the 2 hidden ones, we recite (in the opposite way), by reciting that, we are able to invite or guide their energies into our physical bodies to get the blessin from them.
Tian Peng, which is a very famous character in our Religion Contexts - Tian Peng Yuan Shuai, but due to the story of Journey to the West, he's being illustrated into a greedy pigsy, which is totally a down-grading of the Deity's Reputation.
Ah so Tian peng is pigsy (zhu bajie)?
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha.. that one is in the man-made story Journey to the West la.
ReplyDeleteAt that time, the author which is much more bias towards Buddhism, and so, he wrote a story based on Buddhism to down-grade the fact of Taoism and at that same era, another author who is much more bias on Taoism wrote a story to insult Buddhism... hahahahaha... too bad, both of them are not religious people, so nothing happened to them.
Hehehe. Interesting...
ReplyDeleteoh okok .. understood-ed !!
ReplyDeleteShi Fu.....don't mind if u could repaste a full picture of both Tian Yu and Tian Peng??? thanks,sp
ReplyDeleteI will do it in another section and not here.
ReplyDeleteDo keep a look out on that.
請問這廟在什麼地方?新加坡?
ReplyDelete這些廟﹐全在台灣。
ReplyDeletesifu..but...to your surprise..some places..in singapore..especially related to nite entertainment...the ppl..really pray to the tian peng-pigsy form deity....
ReplyDeleteThat is not Tian Peng, that is just a man-made character to insult Tian Peng.
ReplyDeleteThis is why, alot of Official Taoist Organisations are taking that into consideration of destroying these statues.
Do not get mistaken and mix-up.
so..its mean..when these ppl who involve in entertainment industry...they will send this statue to be 'dotted'...my quest and doubt are that.....who is the spirit that enter into the pigsy statue????yes..u r rite..sifu..quite insulting,.,,but..in reality..many ppl..who doesnt uphold the right Tao..
ReplyDeleteThere are 2 types of spirits being "dot" into such statues:
ReplyDelete1) the Souls that escaped from the Nether World Constables, which in folks term known as E Gui 惡鬼.
2) Souls from people who died in such Red-light District
Recently in Taiwan, some Spiritual Masters had eliminated some of such Souls in a Brothel. Now there are more to capture and destroy.
Once such Souls are destroyed, the Red-light District will somehow encountered some issues, such as business drop or the girls in the Business-area being affected by Negative Beings.... some can cause insane too.
really..tq sifu..u really lighten my dyas...
ReplyDeletebut actually i think...when the statue being dotted up...as u mentioned...the spirits that escaped from the Nether world constables.would go in the statue..but i am sure..these constables..stil could catch the souls...and bring 'them' back to nether world...can they stay long in the statue???really..unbelieveable..
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha, yup, you are right.
ReplyDeleteAlot of people thought that such spirits wont be track down, actually they are wrong. Unless such Spirits went for rebornm if not, wherever they go, they will be captured.
sifu..may i ask..which tai sui above is zao dang???thanks sifu..
ReplyDeleteIn pic taisui_60_32.jpg
ReplyDeleteHi, what is the name of this god? Why it has hands in his eyes? Thank You.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the 60 Tai Sui, known as Jin Bian.
ReplyDeleteThank You so much! And why it has hands in his eyes? Does it mean or symbolise something?
ReplyDeleteTo see things afar and also, to check on the changes in the Heavenly & Earthly Realm.
ReplyDeletejavewu, thank You!
ReplyDeletesifu..may i ask..大道星君..is another tai sui official taoist title???thanks..
ReplyDeleteUsually Da Dao Xing Jun is referring to the Star Lords that is directly or in-directly involve in the Giving of Blessing to the Mortals and other Beings.
ReplyDeleteSuch as Bei Dou Xing Jun or Jiu Huang Xing Jun.
In a temple that i go to, there is a kim sin of the above mentioned "Dang Nian Tai Sui". When I pay respects to him, how should i address him? It would be wrong to address him as "Dang Nian Tai Sui" yah? cos he is not the Tai Sui in charge of the year. If you mentioned that he is the leader, what is his role? What do people usually pray to him for?
ReplyDeleteAlso in your article, I don't quite understand the following sentence -> " Out of all these 60 Tai Sui, there's an Overall In-charge of all Tai Sui, he's name as Yin Jiao (殷郊) – son of the Evil King Zhou of Shang Dynasty 商朝紂王之子 (with 3 Heads and 6 Arms 生有三頭六臂)." That mean the Evil king has 三頭六臂 or 殷郊 has 三頭六臂?
I have ever heard of temples who pray to a deity called 三頭六臂? is it the same or related?
For visiting Temples without the 60 Taisuis, you can just address the Statue as Dang Nian Tai Sui (當年太歲) or Zhi Nian Tai Sui (值年太歲), cos the Tai Sui that being appointed to look after the Year's Issue for that Year is given this Official Title, so do not worry of the wrong addressing.
ReplyDeleteIf you know of the Tai Sui's name for that year, you can add in as Dang Nian Tai Sui XX Da Jiang Jun (當年太歲XX大將軍).
In Singapore, it is not POSSIBLE to see the statue of Yin Jiao, so usually the one you see is Lian Hua San Tai Zi (蓮花三太子), a man-made character.
Yin Jiao, to distribute out the various tasks to the 60 Tai Suis before they are being send-off to carry out the task of looking after the issues of the beings in the Year.
Besides that, Yin Jiao is also part of the Thunderial Department to assist Heaven to capture Demons & Evils and get rid of Negative Entities.

What is the sequence of the 60 Generals according to the years? We are going into the Tiger Year so what is the number and name of the general for this year?
ReplyDeleteSequence of Tai Sui starts from Jia Zi 01 (甲子) and end at Gui Hai 60 (癸亥).
ReplyDeleteTiger Year is Geng Yin, which is position in the no. 27.
Hi Shifu,
ReplyDeleteyou mentioned in your posting "Paying Respect to Lord Tai Sui of Geng Yin Year" about talisman, that one can write or copy. Is it (pic taisui_3.jpg) the talisman?
No, not this one.
ReplyDeleteHi Shifu, your posting "Paying Respect to Lord Tai Sui of Geng Yin Year" points this side for the Tai Sui Mantra (= Talisman?).
ReplyDeleteThe Mantra can be found in:
http://javewu.multiply.com/photos/album/116
So please tell me where the Mantra you mentioned.
Thank you very much in advance.
Shifu,
ReplyDeleteI'm born in the year of the snake, but I've missed the "paying respect to Lord Tai Sui" ceremony. It's now 7th day of lunar new year. Can I still do it ? Otherwise, what are the alternatives ? I've just recovered from a rare illness today. Getting worried...
Yes, you can still do the honouring till 15th day of lunar 1 month.
ReplyDeleteNoted with thanks.
ReplyDeleteJavewu,
ReplyDeleteCan I know where can I find the 太歲寶誥 mantra you were talking about?
Thanks!
Pls scroll down or up and you will see the Bao Gao.
ReplyDeleteIf we want to honour our birth year Tai Sui and this year's Tai Sui on our lunar birthday, do we still read the Bao Gao above or a different one? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes, recite the above one. Even though its only a Bao Gao, but it dedicated to all Tai Suis.
ReplyDeleteAnd do we need to read any other scriptures? Do we also need to send some petitions or something?
ReplyDeleteYes, usually we need that, but those will be conducted and recited by Taoist Priests.
ReplyDeleteSo only Bao Gao and report who we are enough. Thanks Shifu. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, that are enough.
ReplyDeletewe praise tai sui for what?tai sui shi shen me shen?
ReplyDeletetic9, you asked on Jan.25 for the name of the general for the geng-yin tiger year. His name is Wu Huan.
ReplyDeleteTianfu & Tianpeng are 2 of the 9 sons of Doumu. None of the 9 sons was named Tianyou. Is it possible the 2 attendants are called Zuo you ("Left Assistant") & You bi ("Right Assistant") & that their names are actually Tianfu & Tianpeng? Because of the similarity in meaning between fu & you, it seems quite possible that these 2 characters have been switched, leaving one attendant with a name changed from Tianfu to Tianyou.
ReplyDeleteThis may be the xin-wei Taisui (8th year of 60), General Li Su.
ReplyDeleteOn this altar, there are 5 rows, each with 12 Taisui deities. The Taisui deity of the jiazi year (1st year of the cycle of 60) is located in the upper right corner of the photo, at the right end of the top row. The deities in each row are counted from the right to the left side. Not all 12 deities in each row are within view in this photo. Easy to identify are the 31st year deity in a light blue robe & playing a zheng (musical instrument) in the middle of the middle row. Another is the 47th year deity in the pink robe & holding a placard in the lower left corner of the photo. This is sufficient evidence of the numbering scheme of this arrangement.
ReplyDeletePhoto taisui_52.jpg is a duplicate of taisui_51.jpg. The guichou year Taisui (52nd year of 60), Genenal You Qing or Wan Qing, which should be photo taisui_52.jpg is missing from this group of photos. All other photos are correctly numbered.
ReplyDeletePhoto taisui_52.jpg is a duplicate of taisui_51.jpg. The guichou year Taisui (52nd year of 60), General You Qing or Wan Qing, which should be photo taisui_52.jpg, is missing from this group of photos. All other photos are correctly numbered.
ReplyDeleteAt the top of this page are 4 characters written in seal script. What are these four characters in regular script?
ReplyDeleteYou have 40 photos with filenames in the format taisui_60_#.jpg. In all, there are 59 images depicted. Although no photos are duplicates, some images do occur more than once (individually & in a group of 2 or 3). Therefore, there are several taisui missing from the series of 60. Perhaps someone can provide photos of the missing taisui images.
ReplyDeleteIt would be helpful if you would adopt a standard filename format to allow for additional groups. I would suggest the following (very similar to what you use now): taisui-60-A-#.jpg. "A" represents the first series of 60. "B" would represent the 2nd series of 60. (You already have posted a 2nd series with the format taisui_#.jpg, which I would rename to taisui-60-B-#.jpg.) This way, the next series you post would become taisui-60-C-#.jpg. You could then easily supply a key to indicate the temple, neighborhood, & town where the sets A, B, C... can be found. Your site is still the best on the web on this subject. I hope you will take my suggestions seriously, as my intention is only to help you improve the site for the benefit of readers.
The photos in your 1st group (taisui_60_#.jpg) should be renumbered so that the # represents the year of the 60-year cycle. That way they can more easily be compared to the same taisui in a different set.
For photos with more than 1 image, the filename should be taisui-60-A-#-#.jpg or taisui-60-A-#-#-#.jpg. In this way, the filenames will sort in the same order as the 60-year cycle.
Dear Dwhite, thanks for the commenting and sharing, I will look into this issue and will make the necessary changes soon.
ReplyDeleteexcuse me javewu, i have got a question. what kind of encounter it that? do you feel it? what type underground living things are they? can you give me some example please?
ReplyDeleteHe is the Tai Sui for Ji Wei Year, which is the Year of Goat.
ReplyDeletewho will be for the year of the rabbit (this coming lunar year) ?
ReplyDeleteThis Tai Sui will be for Xin Mao Year, which is 2011.
ReplyDeleteok thanks a lot
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome.
ReplyDeleteI will be posting more info on next Year Tai Sui soon, do keep a look out.
im waiting for it all this time. can u also post the (predictions?) in zodiacs
ReplyDeleteSure, will do it soon.
ReplyDeletethanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteHello Master Jave Wu
ReplyDeleteMy first knowing and experience of Diety Tai Sui was in the year 1990. That year my career and luck was down. This fortune teller asked me to pray to Diety Tai Sui at temple in Toa Payoh. True to his words,I win lottery but he never advise to thank him.Later, I was hospitalised for a month in SGH and my luck down again. Much of analysis, I return back to the temple and gave thank. Many ppl this day gave half advise not complete.
Maybe the Master that advise you worried that his word wont come true after revealing to you too much, this is what we known as Po Tian Ji. Not all Masters will dare to do it, cos worry of the punishment after that.

ReplyDeleteThis photo shows 3-faced, 8-armed Doulao yuanjun seated at the top & flanked by 2 standing multi-armed attendants, Zuo you ("Left Assistant") & You bi ("Right Assistant"). To the sides of this group are 2 mirror-image wooden panels both carved with the 8 Buddhist auspicious symbols. Beneath all of this are 5 rows containing the 60 taisui deities. From top to bottom, these rows contain 10, 10, 10, 15, & 15 deities. The deity of the year the photo was taken has been removed from the middle position of the right side of the 3rd row down & placed in a prominent position in the center immediately below Doulao yuanjun.
What year was this photo taken? (2006, or 2011?) Due to the robes on each deity & the resultant lack of detail in the photo, without knowing the order in which the deities have been arranged, it is impossible to identify the taisui of the year. With the year of the photo, it would be possible to deduce the order of the arrangement. Please help provide answers to these questions.
The sign says "the taisui of this year [the taisui of the dinghai year (24th year of 60), 2007], Great General Feng Ji".
