Introduction of Heavenly Marshal Hua Guang of 36 Heavenly Generals (三十六天將之五顯華光馬天君)

Ma Tian Jun (馬天君) aka Hua Guang (華光) aka Ma Ling Guang (馬靈官), one of the 4 important Taoist Generals (道教四大元帥) that assist Deities to withold the Culture of Taoism.

In Main Stream Taoism, Ma Tian Jun will also be invited in major Rituals/Ceremonies as one of the Protectors for the Ritual/Ceremony performed.

Till today, in the folks society, there's still a group of people tend to mix-up Hua Guang Ma Tian Jun (華光馬天君) and Yang Jian Er Lang Shen (楊戩二郎神) together, to be accurate, they are of different Deities.

How to identify them?

For Hua Guang Ma Tian Jun - he will always hold on to a Golden Pyramid (三角金磚) and taking a sword, in some context, he will also have a Fire Crow (火鴉) beside (to represent the Spirit of Fire 火之精).

For Yang Jian Er Lang Shen - holding to a 3-pointed Spear (三尖戟) with a black dog (哮天犬) besides him.

Similarity: Both of them have a 3rd eyes at the fore-head.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Cantonese Opera (粵劇), Hua Guang Ma Tian Jun is considered as their Protector or Ancestor.
  2. Hey bro, I could not find an image of a "fire crow" , I'd love to see one. Ronni
    ReplyDelete
  3. Dear Bro, for the Fire Crow, is not that commonly seen nowadays, due to many reasons.
    In the Past, when ppl will to talk about Fire or Spirit of Fire, they will relate it to the Crow.
    Besides that, Crow also represent Sun or the Movement of the Sun.
    ReplyDelete
  4. Would like to know why was 華光 selected as the patron of 粵劇? Why the fire crow 火鴉, as this would be dangerous, especially in the backstage of the opera stage... all make shift and made of wood?
    ReplyDelete
  5. In certain context, folks tend to believe Hua Guang a Cantonese and so from then, he's imported into the Opera Deities Group as one of the patron for Cantonese Opera (and I'm sure you know that :p Every year in Hong Kong, on his Birthday, all Cantonese Opera Actors will have to take the day off to go pay respect to Hua Guang at their respective Organisations, etc).
    Fire Crow or the Spirit of Fire, this is another main reason why so many opera troupes pay respect to him, cos the folks believed that since Hua Guang is the Deity of Fire, he's able to control the Fire and so, from then, they dedicated an altar to him on the stage while they having their performance.
    ReplyDelete
  6. Yes, thanks Jave, I hear a little about the situation in Hong Kong. I believe the main organization controlling the smaller ones would be 八和會館.
    Thanks also about the info about the Spirit of Fire, it certainly made a lot of sense. :-)
  7. Welcome welcome.
    Yup, its Ba He, but from what I know, there's also quite a lot of issues happening in there.
    But anyway, we are here to promote our Chinese Culture ma.
    Cantonese Opera.. Long Live.. hee hee.
  8. yeah.... should check out my Cantonese stage... plenty of old movies and operas too. :-)
  9. Hahaha, yup, been watching the movies from ur web for quite sometime liao :P
    Chan Bao Zhu is my idol.. like her very much ;)
  10. So that means, when i saw ppl who have Hua Guan's kimsin in our 五营军将, standing in the place of Er Lang Shen... is wrong?
    ReplyDelete
  11. If you don mind I said that it's wrong.
    But too bad, how we helped to promote the correct form of Hua Guang and Yang Jian, there's still a group of people that wanted to be ignorant and making the mistake, and so, we have to leave it to them.
    Hua Guang can never be exist in the 5 Camps but only standing beside Jade Emperor, Xuan Tian Shang Di or any High Ranking Taoist Deities.
    Whereas Yang Jian, can be in the 5 Camps or standing individual as one of the Taoist Generals.
    To be more accurate, there's 2 version of Er Lang Shen, one is the one we know from Feng Shen Bang (楊戩) and another is known as a Historical Character, named as Zhao Yu (趙昱)
    ReplyDelete
  12. hua guang is also known as wu xian da di?
    ReplyDelete
  13. Yup, he's got another title of Wu Xian Da Di (五顯大帝) or Wu Xian Ma Ling Guan (五顯馬靈官).
    Alot of the people tend to mistaken that Wu Xian Da Di got 5 Deities, but actually is not. The title Wu Xian got it's meaning.
    Whereas Wu Fu Da Di (五福大帝) will have 5 Deities -> in-charge of Diseases/illnesses.
    ReplyDelete
  14. singapore got hua guan da di temple ?
    ReplyDelete
  15. Individual dedication no, but side altar yes.
    Hua Guang Da Di is not common among the commoners only Cantonese Opera Performers are more keen to pay respect to him.
    If I'm not wrong, they will be a great celebration on Hua Guang by the Cantonese Opera Performers within the next week months, will keep you inform if there's any :P
    ReplyDelete
  16. hw to u go abt hua guang da di jiu ?
    is there a song / music ?
    ReplyDelete
  17. Bro, dun mention...
    we r here to share....
    hahaha....
    ReplyDelete
  18. kk
    do u hav his jiu also ?
    wif music / song ?
    ReplyDelete
  19. Such a Mantra is not common used among the Folks Taoists, it's only used by Priests or Religious Leaders during Rituals or Ceremonies.
    But for a Taoist who is interested and sincere in learning, definitely there's no problem.
    Such Mantras (Bao Gao) are treated as a form of "Taoist Official Invitation Mantra" for Deities.
    Usually we will just recite it without any music or singing.
    But up to individual, some Taoist Groups will compose a background music for it.
    ReplyDelete
  20. did ur team compose it wif a music ?
    cos i dun tink is easy to find his jiu....
    i m trying to learn his jiu so tt i k sing his jiu to invite him....
    thx
    ReplyDelete
  21. Due to his quite rare in Spore, usually my side also dont invite him unless when necessary.
    No music for the moment.
    But if you interested, you can just recite it while you pay respect to him in the mornin, etc.
    ONE SERIOUS reminder, this Mantra is not mend for Mediums, do not try on Mediums... KEEP in MIND
    ReplyDelete
  22. this is just merely for reference, I will not hold any responsibilities...
  23. Hi Jave,
    if u find the above is inappropriate, feel free to delete..
    ReplyDelete
  24. No problem, as reference, this is good.
    But to invite him for a medium, it's still not accurate, cos alot of the phrases in the mantra is not appropriate.
    This is the mistake that alot of people, who compose the mantras, made in the past....
    Anyway, dont take that too seriously la :P
    To Marshal Ma, money and fortune to him is nothing and a burden for the Mortals, the more you request, the more penniless you wil get.
    You shall find the right Deity or the right department to do ur request.
    Last time, there was a taoist master told me that Hua Guang Da Di normally have golden face statue, whereby Er Lang Shen doesnt have.
    ReplyDelete
  36. 趙昱, any information u can provide for me on him?
    ReplyDelete
  37. Zhao Yu aka Er Lang Shen, he's the one who stopped the disasters of flooding and also the demon snake from attacking the mortals.
    Due to his credits and merits, he was being bestowed with the title Er Lang Shen aka Er Lang Zhen Jun.
    In China, some rural areas, you are still able to find the temples dedicated to him.
    ReplyDelete
  43. In Taoism, Er Lang Shen is a Deity that in-charge of controling of Water Movements, the one normally the Folks pay respect to known as Yang Jian is a man-made character, so no point honouring him.
    Tian Gou, no one will pay respect to it, in Taoism, we will perform Ritual/Ceremony to send it off or chase it away, cos it will only created more problem & troubles for Mortals, if it stays in the Mortal Realm.
    My wife is getting a miscarriage abortion done. Is there any taoist god to pray to or there any ritual to be done after the operation?
    Any temple in Singapore to recommend to go to?
    thanks a lot
    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi,
    For the moment, you can go to Yu Huang Dian located at Havelock Road to pay respect to Zhu Sheng Niang Niang, report to her your wife's name, DOB and when the incident happen.
    And then, request her for blessing you all for another Child soon.
    Then proceed to Du Cheng Huang Temple located at Tanjong Pagar to do a simple report to Cheng Huang on this Incident. Request Cheng Huang to take charge if the case is being cause by other External Issues, if not, request for Safe-blessing for the next expectation.
  53. bro, your mantra is almost 90% the same as what I have in the lv shan recodr book.. :) there is a show of hua guang in the 90s.. it has described hua guang as a god of fire, being sent down to earth to punish all those who are involve in opera (because they try to inpersonate the deity).. but fire god didnt to but instead ask the performer to burn something else and hope that the jade emperor will believe that his job is done.. but the plot was uncovered and fire god was punished and recarnate as hua guang..
    his reborn however is to prevent an invasion of the evil.. he got his enlightenment again after he successfully fight off the evil king..
    i was wondering if there is any truth in this story line?
    ReplyDelete
  54. Dear Bro,
    Yup yup, cos Long Shan Men also practice Lv Shan Spiritual Skills, and so, in someway, the Mantras are quite similar.
    As for the Show, not really accurate la, cos Hua Guang does not come in Mortal Realm to do his Cultivation neither Lv Dong Bin is his Master. This is why, during the Period while this Show was out for Airing, some Taoists actually write in to complain, hahahaha :P
    If you are interested in recalling on how this Show go about, you can visit this link:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN_c903gV5k&feature=PlayList&p=263C5A91BCE73063&index=1
    I'm sure you will find it a bit weird now.
    ReplyDelete
  55. haha u know which show i am talking.. we are from the same era.. actually very difficult for them to air deity show without changing some of the story, they do have disclaimer in front stating that the show is based on imagination and not a fact..
    however, i will be interested to know if any script writer dare to write out any storyline that makes fun of deities/saints of other religion..
    ReplyDelete
  56. Hahaha, yup yup :P
    Its true that most of the stories are changed in-order to satisfy the viewer-ship.
    Got what, recently on the Underworld, perform by Edmund Chen aka Chen Zhi Cai, they make fun of how Ancestors come back and how useless the Underworld Constable :P
    And also, Jade Emperor perform by Huang Wen Yong and Wang My by Chen Li Ping...
    ReplyDelete
  57. hehe.. that is why i wonder if there will be future work on shows featuring other religion.. so far i have only come across a light mock of christianity in an old hk movie..
    wonder if i will be jailed if i self make a short clip, title it to 'for entertainment only'.. i already got lots of ideas when i watch jade emperor/wang mu and the 'timid' li jing..
    ReplyDelete
  58. Jailed? for what and who will want to jail you for this?
    ReplyDelete
  59. for mockery of other religion? the line between entertainment and mockery is 'very thin' here in singapore just like the couple who distributed some articles on muslim.. the difference is i am an individual so easier so garmen the apply their laws on me..
    ReplyDelete
  60. Hahahaha, as long as you dont cross the border of making 2 Religions start Fighting, I think shall be ok.
    I think in Singapore, for the Media-side, making fun of Deities are not a New Issue. Since the Era of Radio-Airing Programme started, Stories of making fun of Spiritual Characters had already started.
    ReplyDelete
  61. This San Tou Liu Bi Ma Hua Guang is the Actual Form?
    ReplyDelete
  62. Yes, this is the Original form of Hua Guang which later in Feng Shen Bang, being used as the Form for Na Zha.
    ReplyDelete
  63. Any dedication to Ma Hua Guang in this form, in Singapore?
    ReplyDelete
  64. No, till today, only in Taiwan and the faraway Rural Village in China still using this form.
    ReplyDelete
  65. sifu..may i ask, izzit 馬府元帥 is 華光大帝?
    ReplyDelete
  66. No, they are different Deities.
    ReplyDelete
  67. Coz, last week, I prayed at da sheng yeh temple, and there's a medium in trance holding 馬府元帥 flag, then i thought he was hua gang. then it means ma yuan shuai is a deity from the five horses? coz, we also confuse what are the five horses stand for at the temple? i guess most temples have them . Thanks for enlighting us.
    ReplyDelete
  68. Not necessary to be associated with the horses. Cos such Yuan Shuai can be Ancestor Honouring and so, we need to know of the background of the Temple/Sintua in-order to know which Ma Yuan Shuai they are honouring.
    ReplyDelete
  69. Is Ma Tian Jun appointed to look over Stuffs related to Divination Consultation?
    ReplyDelete
  70. What does "專理鸞務" means then?
    ReplyDelete
  71. Luan is another Skills in Taoism, which now is being separated out into an Individual Schools. From Luan, we are able to know the Messages being send down from the Spiritual Realms.
    ReplyDelete
  72. recently i saw a statue of hua guang da di similar to this, but his carrying a book and the bian. is it correct? does he hold the whip?
    ReplyDelete
  73. Olden Days, people will do the statue with a Book, but after people realised that actually Hua Guang does not carry that, so they change the image according to the records that we have.
    Hua Guang dont hold Bian, it shall be a Sword.
    ReplyDelete
