How to be a good Spiritual Person/Master? (如何成為修行士上士篇)

Category:Other

A lot of people had been asking me about this question, how to become a good Spiritual Person (can be Spiritual Leader/Master or Priest). At few times, I was really amused by such question.

Maybe for those who are not closely associated or involved in Taoist Events or Spiritual Cases, may not be able to know the truth, but for those who are closely associated with all these events will know that, it's not easy to be a good Spiritual Person in today’s modern society.

Why did I say so?

As a Priest (Spiritual Person) myself, sometime I will also wonder why. Why our Taoism is not able to be promoted correctly or uprightly? Why our Taoism is always on the last of the list when people talk about Religions? After realizing and finding out, I realized that, not because of no talented people in our Taoist Society, but because most of them chose to avoid the topic of Promoting and also try to avoid being too over-shine as compared to others – worrying of being pin-point by some other Spiritual Groups or Taoist Organisations – which is an post-effect of Modernization.

If we will to look back at our basic Teaching of Dao (Accept and wait for respone – response can be in Yin form, which is negative and Yang form, which is positive), if oneself, by promoting the right & upright Culture of Taoism and yet, got insulted or pin-point by the others because of jealousy and hatred, don’t that oneself felt that, actually he/she had done his/her best in Promoting the Culture which caused someone/some groups that took time to go thru or to listen to the things that the oneself promoted – objective achieved (the Yin form can be a motivation or an initial change for the Yang form, meaning negative may not be 100% negative, but it can be a push factor to become a positive achievements)?

To add, certain level of insulting/pin-pointing or crude remarks are good, this will somehow act as a form of motivation (so-called Push factor) to allow the promotion to go on. But once the level of insulting/pin-pointing or crude remarks increased, then oneself must do a serious self-reflection to realize what had gone wrong, where is the main root of fault, etc. In the first place, never ever argue back with those who insulted/pin-pointing or made crude remarks on you, cos, wrong lays on both sides. Once a person can perform self-reflection and not arguing back when thing goes nasty, he/she will have reach a certain level of good Spiritual Person.

Besides doing self-reflection, no arguing back or self realizing, as a good Spiritual Person, oneself also needed to do a lot of self study, researches and finding out the truth and fact of things happened, etc. Only by putting in effort in doing all these, one self can realize how bad the situations are or where the problem lays, etc.

Just recently, a group of folks argued on issues of Jiu Huang Da Di (the Nine Emperors). Claimed that our Taoist Deities, the Nine Emperors were pirates or bandits, etc. But if a person will to do a deeper research or study on our Taoism Deity System or read up our Taoist Scriptures, it's not difficult to know that, our Nine Emperors are actually the Nine Stars that appeared in the Northern Hemisphere which assist the Heavenly Realm to look after the movements of living beings, etc.

For me, usually I DON'T really argue back in a way that YOU MUST BELIEVED IN ME, but I will try to point out where you can find the information from and where you can get the accurate details, etc. Once serious arguing occurred, it will defeat the purpose of Taoist Cultivation or Culture Promoting.

To conclude, to be a good or better Cultivation Spiritual Person, do not just believe in hear-say, first impression sight-seeing or by reading one article, etc, observe more, listen more, read more, feel more, ask more and then do self reflection, self realizing and eliminating of untrue facts, to get a clearer view on what one self wished to learn, know and find out.

Like what my Master like to advise me when he’s still around in this Mortal World:

No Master is a wonder Master (師者無獨強師).
No Master is an incredible Master (師者無萬能師).
As a disciple, besides learning, one self shall try to find out more and not follow blindly (聞觀觸不致盲追求).
Follow blindly is not a disciple but a copy-cat or Parrot (不如谷中徘徊蕩音).
Only by finding out more, then a disciple is considers as a Real disciple
(方成眾徒中之徒, 修行方士之首士).

From then, I know that, in-order to learn more, one self will have to put in more effort to find out than just to sit there, waiting for the skills or knowledge to be taught.

This is the Real Dao – making use of the Push factor to direct in the Pull factor, collating the 2 factors into 1 factor which go thru the whole physical self to reach a standard of no "Push and Pull factor" to become "Push-Pull factor".
Accept what ever one self can’t accept, in order to be accepted by the Whole.
(納之於不能受之事,眾能汝之)

This is another phrase that being passed down by my Ancestors.

After hearing this sentence, a lot of the people start to scratch their head and a lot of question marks appeared in front of them. It may sounds a bit profound, but actually, it’s just part of a mortal’s life. Only for those who can really understand and practice it, then one self can attain another level of cultivation.

Since the first day when mortals are being created in this Universe, no one mortal can accept things, events, issues or cases that he/she doesn’t want to accept. This is one of the causes of mortals’ emotional sense – known as hatred or selfishness.

In order for one self to achieve in his/her cultivation to become a successful Spiritual Person, one self will need to overcome such emotional sense in order to accept what ever one self cant accept.

When one self opened up him/herself to accept what ever that he/she can’t accept in the past, and now he/she can willingly to accept, one self has achieve in the so-called Wisdom-opening cultivation.

It is always easy to say but never easy to do.

Over different eras, decades, etc, not much cultivated people can achieve that fully, and of cos, this refers to the modern day cultivated people too. In today’s cultivation World, I can say only a very small number of such cultivated people achieve in this Acceptance-practice.

So how to accept what ever one self can’t accept?

First, by practicing self-realizing. By doing self realizing, one self needed to study on the issues closely. Look into the details of why one self can’t accept, find the root of the not-accepting-pushing-force, once the root is being realized, try to disconnect it with one self’s cultivation will or seeking another high one self to assist in the disconnecting.

For example, due to insulting, one self cannot accept the other self. If one self can study deeper into the case, he/she will know why such insults happened, whether it’s because one self ever insulted the other party before or the things that one self said had hurt the other party, etc.

If either of the cases happened, try to make apologize to the other party for forgiving and if the other party will to accept one self’s apologize, then one self will be accepted and the things that one self involved will be accepted by all people around one self and the other party’s surrounding people, etc.

While doing self realizing for such cases, one self must always stay calm and always stay alert with an open-mind, cos only by having that, one self can have a clearer mind to study on the issues, etc.

Second, be Humble. This may sounds a bit out of topic, but this is one of the few important factors that affect one self to be accepted by the other selves.

To be Humble as in the sense of willingly to take in any comments, complains or even reprimands.

By willingly and openly accepting such actions, one self will realize the mistakes that one self had made. From there, if one self will to make changes accordingly, he/she will be able to accept what ever the other selves can’t accept on and to achieve in the cultivation of accepting what ever can’t be accepted.

Third, be Tough. Tough as in withholding the determination in believing that one self accept what ever can’t be accepted and one self will be accepted by the Whole.

This Tough, some times can be really tough, cos not much selves can really have that good determination in withholding his/her believe till the last moment.

Usually during such “withholdings”, one self will encounter with a lot of external pushing-factors (can be positive or negative) that cause one self of losing the determination and end up, choose to give up.

Once such thoughts are being created in one self’s mind, then he/she will not be able to concentrate. In order to concentrate, one self must strongly believed that, by really holding on to what one self’s believe, he/she will be able to enjoy the “result of being accepted” in a short period.

Accepting the un-acceptable issues can make one self more mature in order to proceed to another level of cultivation.

By accepting the un-acceptable issues, can also make one self succeed in whatever he/she never succeed before.

In conclusion, always try one’s best to accept whatever that he/she thinks that cannot be accepted. If one self never try to accept the things that he/she thinks that it’s difficult to accept, one self will never know that what is accepting.

"our" taoism as you said is actually part of the world's orthodox religions...

there is no "our" or "their" religions as long as things and life are viewed from the global point of view...

  4. Even if it is part of the "orthodox" religions there is still a need to maintain and keep the culture going and not be mixed up with other beliefs. If not how can we maintain the orthodoxy of a belief? Being harmonious doesn't mean being mixed up.

that is the point... being harmonious while not getting mixed up...

the above is just part of life... you will see more complex things as you grow up...

  6. May you explain what you mean by "there is no "our" or "their" religions as long as things and life are viewed from the global point of view..."

  7. bluelotus18...

in buddhism... there is no "self"... so we cannot use "our" taoism or "their" religion as a statement... but me mean beyond the concept... using "our" taosim and "their" religions as a statement releases the ego eccentricity in ourselves easily... and there are further more reasons beyond further the concept...

but in common chatting... people do use" our" and "their" but using the statements with religions as a full statement is very dangerous...

  8. Even if there is no "self" there is still the upright belief and the heterodox path. Even if we use the "emptiness of dharma" there are still those who can perceive and not perceive the Tathagata's true and actual body. The Diamond Sutra still states that there are those who can perceive and can't perceive the Buddha.

So it is okay to say that "this statement" is different form "the statement" of the other religions' belief in a permanent self.

And I believe that Taoism has also enough knowledge regarding emptiness, but there should still be clarifications between the right and proper teachings and the misleading ones. So when we say "Long Shan Men" we have a particular way of beliefs and when we say "Pure Land Buddhism" they also have their own way of practicing their faith. And right now there are those "folk taoist" practices that are not accepted by the Orthodox or Main Taoism, so there are also differences. Your application of prajna in this aspect is mis-used.

  9. Shi Fu....really appreciate your write-up and teaching....never got this type of factual and self-thought vision before...Thanks.

an orthodox belief is neutral ... and importantly from the view of humanity... and is from many sided of life...

taoism and buddhism have certain things in common... and vice versa and likewise for others... if you studied carefully...

if a point of view is different from others, then only time can tell...

do not jump to conclusions too fast at "folk taoist" practices as only heaven can tell... and when the deities speak from a humanity and balanced heavenly point of view, and when the time is ripe... you will know when the time comes for the truth...

but the truth of things is not always 1 sided...

my prajna is ever changing and ever learning... but me always remind myself always to learn the right and proper way...

as for what is the right and proper way for you to learn... only time can tell... and your commitment to contribute back to society etecetera etecetra... and it is not easy to say "contribute back to society" in the simplest form for me at least...

  11. Yes I do know them because I am a Buddhist Disciple for 7 years and have taken refuge under many Buddhist Masters. I don't have any qualms against folk taoism too because our Tua is originally a folk taoist tua, what I mean is that there are difference and you don't need to apply "emptiness of phenomena" and teach a person propagating his beliefs not to distinguish his beliefs from others.

I just stated that there are those "folk taoist" practices that are not accepted by the Main Taoism here is the main point: Folk Taoism is such a huge term, if we do it as you say it is no good either to brand this as our religion and that as the religion of others but then the distinguishing factor will be gone. Like this, [those "folk taoist" practices that are not accepted by the Orthodox or Main Taoism] now you don't know what I mean cos it's such a wide range. If all religion don't have distinguishing marks it will be like this also. Do you know that what i mean by [those "folk taoist" practices that are not accepted by the Orthodox or Main Taoism] are practices like calling the nine emperors as pirates or the degradation of High taoist deities as servants like a temple here saying that Bao Gong is a higher deity than Xuan Tian Da Di- these things are folk taoist practice that whosoever true Taoist Master you ask will deny or will be frowned at.

Then what if the concept of this and that will vanish? What will be the term for this taoism or for that taoism? What will you feel if there is a taoist sect that states sun wu kong statues should be banned? Wouldn't you feel bad? Wouldn't there be a difference between your opinion and theirs? If there is difference there is a name there is a distinction. Like your opinion varies from my opinion- there is a difference. Your opinion is your opinion and it is distinct from my opinion.

And I am not saying that all things are 1 sided cos that will be putting words into my mouth. If your prajna can't understand what I mean then only time can make you understand these things better.

  13. wah...

you guys are just like fighting in a war with words. It's good to compare and contrast each others' point of view as there is no right or wrong as everyone will benefits and learn something in the end. But, make sure it's a friendly discussion.

Everyone have their own perspectives of certain things.
Anyway, just stay with the text or refer back to those text which is being past down so many thousand years ago. It just require deeper thinking and the answer everyone get will be the same.

  15. Hahahaha.. dear lotus, no need to "push & pull" with the others on this article, cos only those self-cultivated Taoists or the enlighted Taoist can really know what are the essences in Taoism and the Culture of Dao.

Till today, alot of Religions cannot compare with our Taoism, becos of their foreign aspects and non-chinese-related teachings passed down by their Spiritual Masters/etc, and this is why, alot of Religions cannot find a Self or a Recognition standard to prove their belonging and harmony - whereas for our Taoism, we do our promoting of own Chinese-rooted Dao Culture and at the same time respect other Religions as a form of Teaching only (if the Religion is regards as a form of Teaching, then no comparison is needed between who n who, cos pure Teaching doesnt conflict with any Religions).

Talking about Self, in our Taoism, our main objective is to see self, realise self and then expand one self to meet the other many selfs, its just like mixing the Yin and Yang elements to create the output of Million of Yin-Yang or Selfs. This is what other Religions can not understand and achieve, if they claimed that they do not need or have a Self.

If any Religions tried to mix the Yin and Yang, like what our Taoism doing, to achieve the outcome of Million Selfs, then they wont be known as their Religion, but known as Taoism.. this is what alot of modern day Religions are doing (including alot of so-called Main Stream or Orthodox imported Religions).

Using the term "our" is a form of self recognition and sense of belonging, just like a Country advising the citizens to praise the Country by singing national songs or reciting pledges - in Chinese, this is know as Zhong 忠, meaning Loyalty, which a lot of other Religions dont look into (if they claimed that they do not need a Self), but in our Taoism, Loyalty is a MUST.

Once a follower of a Religion dont dare to claim "our" Religion or "our" Sect, then it defeats the purpose of learning Religious Skills, Knowledge and Culture or so-called the Teaching from the Spiritual Masters/etc, cos the wisdom have yet to be open-up in-order to accept who they are and what they are.

Only by knowing OUR own Religion and following OUR own Sects' teaching, then one self will benefit from what shall be bestowed upon.

Same goes to, having the sense of belonging to one self's Country or hometown and benefit by sharing the joy of a Country's prosperity, etc.

  17. I understand Shifu. I will select whosoever I talk with later, cos not all people can even realize their own selfs. I stand corrected, sorry for any inconvenience.

  18. Hahahaha.. silly, no need to apologise, cos Taoism is not a Religion that can be understand fully or correctly by any one self - only those who put in effort to realise one self will be able to know what is the essences of Taoism.

Not because you called me Shi Fu and so I side on you, cos Taoism is like that, and in-order to achieve the our Dao cultivation, I or we have to be like that.

In here, I can see more clearly on who is still finding their path to achieve the realising of one self and who is about to reach the ending point of the realising to promote to the next stage of cultivation.

Good, keep up the good work.

  20. Hahahaha.. welcome welcome.

This is my task here to lead those who are sincerely and truthfully to promote our Taoism, onto the right path.

  21. I just want to add in my view, likewise our yin and yang philosophy, no matter how they will not meet together. To promote taoism, we must be persistent, full of determination, and sense of integrity.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hahahaha.. yup, if we will to view Yin and Yang as the real form of 2 gust of energies, they wont be able to mix together, cos they are already there to lead guide us along in the Yin & Yang Realm.

But if we will to transform the 2 gust of energies into the action for a Mortal, then the meeting-up or so-called post-action (explosion) will causes a very great effect or action. Such a the theory will be like the Pull and Push action (neither Pull can be merge into Push, but we need to use the Pull to enhance the Push and Push to enhance to Pull).
