In Taoism, most of the Proper Trained Taoist Priests will be given at least 3 sets of Addressing Terms for the 12 Lunar Months.
Why these 3 sets of Lunar Month Terms are given?
Firstly, during Major Reports to the Celestial Realms, such Terms must be used and not using the Physical Number Term, as according to “Up there”, Physical Number Term is only being recognised in this Mortal Realm.
Secondly, easier for Taoist Priests to remember and not making any form of Un-necessary Mistakes, such as Chinese Character Two & Three are being mix-up while writing of Spiritual Petitions (疏文) or Making Reports (上奏).
According to Old Traditional Records, the 3 Sets of Lunar Month Terms are being “composed” by the Name of Flowers, Scenes that appear in that Particular Lunar Month, Surnames of certain Popular Historical Character of that particular Era, etc.
In the following, Jave will shared with all of you the common set of Flower/Scenery Terms used for the Lunar 12 Months:
Lunar 1 Month: Duan Yue (端月) – represent the Extreme Starting Point
端月正。一年元始春風朗。
Lunar 2 Month: Hua Yue (花月) – represent Flower Blossom. In Chinese Culture, this is also a Month dedicated to Flowers, in Chinese Myth, this is the Month of Different Flower Fairies Birthday.
二月花。花月花開花仙降。
Lunar 3 Month: Tong Yue (桐月) – a type of Tree known as Phoenix Tree, these type of Trees will have their Flower Blossom on the 3rd Lunar Month. According to Records, after the Flower Blossom, it will attract Phoenixes to stay on the Tree and lay eggs. Such Trees’ Leave will start to dry-up and turn red before Lunar 8 Month.
桐三月。梧桐開啟秋天落。
Lunar 4 Month: Mei Yue (梅月) - The Stuffy & Rainny Season starts. It tells us that the Spring Season is over and welcoming us in front was the Hot & Scorching Summer.
梅雨四。四月春去夏季逢。
Lunar 5 Month: Pu Yue (蒲月) – A type of River Plant known as Lepironia Articulata. During the 5th Lunar Month, this type of Plant will be used to ward-off Negative Entities and also, used to make Herbal Tea for cooling effect.
端午蒲。五月時節蒲菖揚。
Lunar 6 Month: Li Yue (荔月) – represent the Harvesting Period of Lychee.
紅荔月。荔枝紅潤五娘歡。
Lunar 7 Month: Qiao Yue (巧月) – Qiao, represent the 7th Day of Lunar 7 Month, the Day known as Lunar Valentine’s Day.
七月巧。乞巧聽聲月夜中。
Lunar 8 Month: Gui Yue (桂月) – Harvesting Period of Osmanthus Flower. Use to brew Chinese Tea for the matching of Moon-cake or Pastry that made to honour the Moon.
八月桂。桂花飄香正仲秋。
Lunar 9 Month: Ju Yue (菊月) – the Peak Period of the Blossoming of Chrysanthemum Flowers. On the 9th Day of Lunar 9 Month, it will be the Day for People or Siblings to wear a Chrysanthemum Flower on the Head or in front of the Chest to remembrance Siblings or Friends who had pass-on.
九月九。一朵黃菊憶懷衷。
Lunar 10 Month: Yang Yue (陽月) – the Transition Period of Positive to Negative Energies. This is the Month for Taoists to remembrance the Credits & Merits of the Fore-fathers or Ancestors whom had put in effort in creating a Peace & Harmony Home for the descendants.
陽月十。十全之極小陽象。
Lunar 11 Month: Xia Yue (葭月) – a Month that represented by Phragmites Australis. This type of Plant will open during the Mid-year and will wither-off on the 11th Lunar Month. In Chinese Culture, whenever the Chinese saw that this type of Plant wither-off, it means that the New Year will be arriving.
葭月葦。過了一年總到尾。
Lunar 12 Month: La Yue (臘月) – a Busy Month for the Chinese by preserving Meat-stuffs for the New Year. The process of Preserving of Meat-stuffs is known as La and so, in Chinese, this Last Lunar Month also known as La Yue. In some Records, La Yue also being used to address 11th Lunar Month.
臘月新。一年更新春天臨。
