Honouring Cheng Huang at Du Cheng Huang Temple (都城隍廟祭明靈王)

Today, the 10th Day of Lunar 5 Month, me and one of the Long Shan Men's Disciples visited Du Cheng Huang Temple (都城隍廟) located at Tanjong Pagar to pay our respect to Du Cheng Huang aka Ming Ling Wang (都城隍明靈王).

Upon arrival, the Altar was already full with Fruits & Paper Offerings. After a quick preparation & laying out of our Offerings, we started to pay our respect to Du Cheng Huang Ming Ling Wang.

Due to the Temple was a bit small and crowded, we had to make our leave straight after the Honouring.

Outside the Temple, Hokkien Opera was going on with only An audience. This shows that, our Chinese Culture really need some Boosting.

On 11th Day of Lunar 5 Month (03 Jun 2009), it will be the Actual Manifestation Anniversary of Du Cheng Huang, for those who are interested, remember to drop by to pay your respect.

The Celebration will last till Friday (but actual will last their Sunday).

  3. I thought He was conferred the Title of Wei Ling Gong?

  4. In Spore, the highest is Wei Ling Gong, but to honour the Highest Cheng Huang, we still have to visit Du Cheng Huang Temple.

  5. Isn't the Cheng Huang inside Du Cheng Huang Temple, Wei Ling Gong?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yup, you can see his Title being hang on top of the Outer-hall Altar.

  7. Then Ming Ling Wang would be?

  8. Ming Ling Wang is Du Cheng Huang lo? You can get the Info of the different ranking of Cheng Huang in the link provided.

Wei Ling Gong is 2nd level.

  9. So, the Actual Highest in Singapore is Wei Ling Gong whose Statue is in Tanjong Pagar Du Cheng Huang Temple and we can pray to the Highest Cheng Huang in the World-Ming Ling Wang via there.

Am I right to say this?

  10. Yup yup.

Due to Spore can only be considered as a Province and not Capital, so in the past, after building the Du Cheng Huang Temple, the people there change Ming Ling Wang to Wei Ling Gong, in-order not to jeopadize with the Position of the Cheng Huang.

  11. Okay, confusion cleared.

    Not to jeopardize means?

Btw, is it okay to do chanting of this Scripture after 6pm tomorrow?

  12. Cos in the past, in Imperial System, positioning is very important, no matter what, die die must go according to the Ranking, so Spore cannot have Ming Ling Wang, cos we are only a Province. So this is not to jeopardize.

    Of cos can chant.

  13. Oh, I see.
Hmm.. What if Jeopardizing took place back then? What will happen?

    Okay, thanks.

  14. For Chinese, definitely it will be treated as Disrespect.

  15. Yea, this I agree.

Will Spiritual Issues happened if it took place back then?

  16. any idea, why the one in Toa Payoh having a different date ?
The temple care taker told me is on 5th Lunar Month 19th Day.

  17. That is not Du Cheng Huang.

Other than the Ranking of Du Cheng Huang, all other Cheng Huang will have their own Anniversary Date.

  18. Shi Fu, I had ever been told by elders when I was a kid,
that Cheng Huang was actually originated from a water demon ( Cui Kui).
Pleased be advised, is that true ?

  19. That is a Myth of Shui Gui Bian Cheng Huang. In Chinese Opera, sometime you will be able to see it.

If you want, you can key in 水鬼變城隍 in Yahoo or Google, you will be able to find it.

  20. Oh..I see. so such story was only a myth.

    Another question regarding Cheng Huang.
I remembered when my father passed on,
We requested water in a clay jar at Cheng Huang temple,
then the water was used to wipe my father's body.
What was the meaning of that, Shi Fu ?

  21. In Chinese Term, we call this procedure as Mai Shui aka Buying Pure & Clean Water or some called it as Spiritual Water.

This is to clean away all the Dirty Stuffs, Sins & Debts in-order for the Pass-on to proceed with Ease & Care-free.

  22. but now for funeral, we still buy water from temple? i thot tap water will do with some chanting?

    ReplyDelete
  23. In Spore, we cant really see that form of Practices, but in Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillippine, China, Taiwan & Hong Kong, the Traditional Practice is still be carry-out.

In Spore, we just go to near by Water-source, open the Tap, chant and then burn paper to thank the Deity.

  24. In my town Pontianak (West Borneo), this practice is still carried out until today.
But for Christian or buddhist chinese there. I think they don't carry out that practice anymore.
Thanks alot for the information, Shi Fu.

  25. Yes, only Taoist or Traditional Chinese will still use this Procedure.

But due to the influences on the Non-Taoist Faith, alot of our Traditional Practices lost, this is an issue that we needed to look into.

  26. Hopefully, under your guidance and the awareness
of everybody, the traditional cultures from our ancestors
will always be carried out and inherited to our descendants.
    Thanks Shi Fu.
