Introduction on the meaning of San Tan (三壇簡介)

These few years, a lot of folks had come across the term San Tan (三壇) aka Sam Tua in our local Folks Belief, after hearing that, a lot of the folks started to scratch their head and pull their head, trying to figure out what is the meaning of San Tan aka Sam Tua.

And after going thru a lot of the newspaper reports and by asking the folks that got involved in some of the events that San Tan aka Sam Tua conducted, there are still a group of LOST folks. Reason, cos the folks that conducted the events for the San Tan aka Sam Tua dont really give a clear and accurate reply to the enquiries, etc.

Just now, having a quick lecture with one of Long Shan Men students, suddenly I realized that, actually in our records, there is an article on the introduction on San Tan aka Sam Tua, and so, I think its time to do some quick sharing on it.

Here it goes:

First, San Tan actually is a term use in Taoism to differentiate the different types of Taoist Groups that conduct the different Rituals/Ceremonies under the permission, agreement or approval of Heaven or so-called the Three Realms.

The Earliest San Tan is a combination of the Taoist Groups that come Only under the Main-stream Taoism, which are:

Dao Tan (道壇)

Fa Tan (法壇)

Shen Tan (神壇)

Dao Tan, a Taoist Group that do preaching on Taoism by using the name of Taoism and the teachings that passed-down by San Qing (三清) aka The Three Pure One.

By using the teachings, a Cultivated Taoist will try his/her best to assist the other to choose or walk onto the Right or Upright Path. By given a chance to the person to go under seeking Mastership under the Taoist School, a Dao Tan will be considered as have succeeded in the promoting of the Upright Culture of Taoism.

Heres a Chinese Paragraph describing the Dao Tan:

道壇

道壇為首。代道傳道。

守正道。授正道。

揚真道。護真道。

以道力化。迷根眾生。

道壇者。以道度世。以壇祝神。

上告穹蒼。中度世夫。下濟幽冥。

Quick Translation:

Among the Three Groups, Dao Tan is the First out of the Three.

It withholds the Upright Preaching & Culture of Taoism.

By using the Power of Dao, it helps to lead the Lost Beings onto the Right Path.

Dao Tan, a Group that call-upon the Super-Nature-Enhancement from the Three Realms, to assist Beings & Souls to lessen their sufferings.

Now, Fa Tan.

Fa Tan, the Taoist Group that Practiced the Spiritual Skills of Taoism.

By passing down the Upright & Accurate Spiritual Skills, Fa Tan will be able to lead a suffering Being out of sufferings or lessen their fears. By allowing the others to get involved in learning the Spiritual Skills of Taoism, Fa Tan will have succeeded in bonding the Mortals to Taoism and allowing them to close connection with the Three Realms.

Heres a Chinese Paragraph describing the Fa Tan:

法壇

法壇為次。以經修法。

修正法。練正法。

傳真法。教真法。

以經力化。迷本眾生。

法壇者。以經救世。以壇顯法。

先禱老君。再望上帝。三敬祖師。

Quick Translation:

Among the Three Groups, Fa Tan come in as Second.

It imparts the Upright & Accurate Spiritual Skills of Taoism.

By using the Power of Fa, it helps to lead the Suffering Beings onto the Soothing Path.

Fa Tan, a Group that call-upon the Super-Nature-Enhancement from the Various Deities & Ancestors, to assist Beings & Souls to lessen their sufferings.

Follow-by, Shen Tan.

Shen Tan, the Taoist Group that uses the Name and Assistance from Deities to assist the Lost Beings.

By using the Name & Assistance from the Deities, a Media (known as Medium), will make requests upon a Particular Deity to provide the necessary blessings. Without promoting any other Superstitious and any other Un-realistic Knowledge, by leading the Beings to get Blessing from the Taoist Deities, a Shen Tan will have succeeded in bringing the Beings onto the Right Path.

Heres a Chinese Paragraph describing the Shen Tan:

神壇

神壇末位。以師為神。

觀正神。念正神。

存真神。請真神。

以師力化。迷性眾生。

神壇者。以師助世。以壇侍神。

前助諸仙。內助壇民。外助遊孤。

Quick Translation:

Among the Three Groups, Shen Tan is the positioned at the end.

It connects the Beings & the Deities by using a Upright & Correct Media.

By using the Power of Shen, it helps to lead the Suffering Beings onto the Clearing Path.

Shen Tan, a Group that uses the Name & Blessing from the Various Deities & Ancestors, to assist Beings & Souls to clear their doubts.

Last, even though San Tan is being separated into Three different groups, but, they still belongs to Only One Root, which is the Big Dao aka Da Dao (大道).

Heres a Chinese Paragraph describing the San Tan:

道教三壇。壇壇揚道。法門不一。同歸一宗。

歷代不改。逕世不異。皈宗一道。皈命三清。

Quick Translation:

San Tan of Taoism, each of them are using their own title to promote Dao.

Even though each of them uses Different sets of Theories to do preaching, All Three still come under Dao.

Forever No Change and No Change from the Beginning.

Just One Objective to follow, which is the Teaching of San Qing.

Nowadays, in Singapore, the San Tan aka Sam Tua that the folks come across is actually originated from one of the Taoist School, which known as Lv Shan Sect (閭山派) or Fa Zhu Gong Sect (法主公派).

Under Lv Shan Sect, there are a few minor Sects, which a few of them do have the practice of inviting the Various Deities from the Various Level to come to give assistances while the Spiritual Masters conducting Rituals/Ceremonies.

Here are 2 different Groups of Lv Shan San Tan:

First Group:

Zuo Tan (Left Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the enhancement from Long Shu Wang – one of the Founders of Yoga Sect, believed to be an Indian (左壇龍樹王)

Zhong Tan (Central Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the protection from the Spiritual Armies & Generals from the Central Position in the Three Realms – folks mistaken it as Li Na Zha, which is not accurate (中壇中央將)

You Tan (Right Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the blessing from Bei Di Gong which is known as Xuan Tian Shang Di (右壇北帝公)

Second Group:

Xuan Tan (The Miracle or Magical Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the enhancement from Zhao Gong Ming – one of the Marshals that ward-off negative entities (玄壇趙元帥)

Zhong Tan (Central Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the protection from the Spiritual Armies & Generals from the Central Position in the Three Realms – leading Marshal got a surname Li and as usual, folks mistaken it as Li Na Zha, which is not accurate (中壇李元帥)

Xia Tan (The Rear Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the guarding from General Black Tiger which is known as Hei Hu Jiang Jun, which is believed to be the assistant of Xuan Tan (下壇黑虎將)

Till today, I have yet to see a fully Accurate San Tan aka Sam Tua being combined or worked closely together to promote the Upright Culture of Taoism, by praying hard, hope to see one soon in our Local Taoist Culture.

  2. Xuan Tan Zhao Yuan Shuai, the official title given to him by Heaven after he got his enlightenment.

At the same time, the tiger that he subdued also got a chance to get enlightenment with him, which later, being given the title of Xia Tan.

As for Zuo Tan Long Shu Wang, he was an imported Character from the Yoga Sect from Hinduism, same said Tibetian Buddhism. Quite a famous Character in their Religion, cos from records, he is the 1st person to get enlighted on the styles of different forms of Yoga, etc.

  3. yoga? the one tt pple practice bend here n there? btw why is he in taoism oso? is there any believe or history of him? or maybe there is some reason tt he was imported.. please enlight. thank you

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yes, thats Yoga :P

In late Song or late Ming Dynasty, he was being imported into one of the Taoist Groups...

As for why, I will do a posting on that soon :P

  7. does 龍樹王 here refer to 龍樹菩萨?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yes, in folks term or Non-Taoist term, Long Shu Wang is being addressed as Long Shu Pu Sa.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Long Shu Wang/ Pu Sa's sanskrit name is Nagarjuna Bodhisattva.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 中壇中央將 is the Central Marshal of THREE REALMS and not FIVE DIRECTIONAL CAMPS.
Right? So it is not to be mistaken as Tiong Tan Wan Shuay, Lee Na Zha?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes,cos Wu Ying aka the Five Directional Camps are a Culture that being formed much later and so, in the Ancient Era, they wont be known or recognised by the Taoists or Folks Culture.

But, the Marshal does have a Surname Lee, just that, no one known which is the exact one.

  12. just curious. so if they need to display a set of the san tua (first grp that u mentioned), 中坛's kim sim is??? cause so far, wat i saw was 中坛元帅. 右壇北帝公is 玄天上帝rite?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yup, for normal folks, they will used the normal Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai kimsin that you can normally see in the market.

As for some particular Taoist Groups, they will specially dedicate a General-look-statue of abt middle-age for the Zhong Tan.

    ReplyDelete
  14. there's quite a few Sum tua temple in singapore

    ReplyDelete
  15. In Taoism, San Tan only refers to what I have mentioned above, without the Official Endorsement by Taoism, the rest are just Folks Group which cannot represent the Real & Upright San Tan Culture.

    ReplyDelete
  16. But there's the 三坛总坛 in Singapore

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sorry that, in Taoism, there's nothing called San Tan Zhong Tan, unless they are Officially Endorsed by Taoism, if not, again, they are just Folks Group or part of Folks Culture.

In Real, San Tan is just a name or an addressing term used to represent the combination of the various different Taoist Culture & Skills, it does not mean anything.

    ReplyDelete
  18. can u introduce more on 龍樹王 , and also can where we see a fa tan go on .

    ReplyDelete
  19. This one I wont touch on it, cos he is not a Taoist Deity, you can try to look for more info online or other websites.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So what do you mean by there's nothing called San tua Zhong tua ??? So you mean that ppl that pratice Sum tua thing in singapore is fake???

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sam Tua is not fake, just that the followers need to know which lineage thet are from, do not follow blindly, if a Sam Tua is not officially endorse or accepted, it it just like any folks sintua, no much meaning n objectives.

  22. Hi bro, Thanks for sharing with your knowledge with us. but i see in your blog that you were saying:( Zhong Tan (Central Sector of the Spiritual Level), which got the protection from the Spiritual Armies & Generals from the Central Position in the Three Realms – leading Marshal got a surname Li and as usual, folks mistaken it as Li Na Zha, which is not accurate (中壇李元帥) So can you tell us what god is this?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yup, that is the actual Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai.

In Taoism, Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai, got a surname of Lee, born in Ancient Era - expected to be in Tang Dynasty or before Tang Dynasty, not much Details being given.

As for Li Na Zha, he is a man-made Character in Chinese Classic Feng Shen Bang, which later being imported into our Chinese Folks Culture at late Ming Dynasty & Qing Dynasty (but the origin form of Li Na Zha - the Hinduism Dharma Protector was being imported in China during Song Dynasty by the immgrants, etc).

    ReplyDelete
  24. And 1 more thing i will like to know is you were saying until today, no fully san tan being combined together. So can you pls let us know what is the full set of (三坛祖师) & ( 三坛恩主), and how many general are there in san tan history from your knowledge. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. ok.. so whats the full name of zhong tan if his name is not Li Na Zha ???

    ReplyDelete
  26. Earliest set of 三壇祖師 consists of the Three Heavenly Masters & Spiritual Masters, which are:

    正一天師張道陵
    靈寶天師葛玄及葛洪
    茅山三茅祖師

Which the current one, most of the Folks are just mixing & matching here and there in-order for the folks to accept or claiming that they are very powerful, etc.

三坛恩主, to be true shall be those who founded the San Tan Culture, but again, after certain era, the 恩主 changed to various characters, some of the charactes are even unknown characters.

Yes, in San Tan, there are many Generals & Marshals being invited or summoned, if the San Tan is an Official Endorsed & Accepted San Tan by Taoism, they will know who are the Generals & Marshals, in here I wont go in further, cos I'm still waiting for those who are known as "San Tan" disciples to tell me what are the lineage they belongs too, before I impart the Original Set of San Tan Shen Bing Skills to them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. In the Future, I will reveal it with the San Tan Shen Bing Skills.

Without this Zhong Tan, San Tan cannot function.

    ReplyDelete
  28. But Bro Javewu from your post above you mention that ppl mistaken it and now you say that it is Zhong tan yuan shuai...So i wonder that all your post above is the actual fact or "jus folks culture"...No offence =)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ppl mistaken Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai as Li Na Zha, but in fact, Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai is not Li Na Zha, Zhong Tan Yuan Shuai is a General with the surname of Li, which is one of our Taoist Heavenly Marshals.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So what you mean that the "singapore set is not orignial set???"

    ReplyDelete
  31. From the first set of Wu Ying being used in Singapore abt 180 years ago is already not accurate, due to the influence of the story Feng Shen Bang.

Till today, only a few Upright Taoist Groups used the correct set of Wu Ying.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So what you mean is that most of the temple is not upright???
1)Can i know what Upright Taoist Group you mean is upright
2)Which set is the accurate group of wu ying???
3)So you mean the Singapore Group of Sum Tua Pratice is not orignal ???
4)And from what i noe is the San tan Zu shi you mean is not accurate???
5)Which are the main General and Marshals which Sum tua the Summon???
    No offence =)

    ReplyDelete
  33. (Earliest set of 三壇祖師 consists of the Three Heavenly Masters & Spiritual Masters, which are:

    正一天師張道陵
    靈寶天師葛玄及葛洪

Hi Bro, Nice reply from you. But i don't get what you mean by shen bing skills. What type of shen bing skills do you mean? And you were saying that you are still waiting for san tan disciples to tell you before you impart the original set of san tan shen bing skills to them. So are you saying you are one of the disciples so that you can impart your skills to them.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And you were talking about the Wu ying earlier on.You mentioned above that the set of wu ying being bring in to singapore is not accurate so can you tell me the accurate set and how is the set of wu ying colours being arrange in san tan believe? Hope to hear from your reply soon.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hahahaha, this one I wont do any comment, in-order to know the truth, you need to refer back to the San Tan that you join in or you participate in to find the Root of the San Tan.

If the reply you got from your San Tan is differ from what I have posted here, then the answer will be very clear and clean, no need me to comment too much.

I have go thru most of our local San Tan Groups, most of them do have things & practices missing here and there, I cant blame them, just that, maybe in certain era in Singapore, the teachings that they have received are being mix-up or being mis-interpret.

    ReplyDelete
  36. San Tan Shen Bing Skills (三壇神兵法), in the whole World, only a few Ancient Taoist Spiritual Masters are being imparted, my Ancestor is one of them, till today, not much ppl had even seen this Set of Skills in Singapore, but from what I know, in Taiwan, there are some Upright Taoist Groups using it.

But where, I have yet to visit there and take a personal observation, so cant comment much.

    ReplyDelete
  37. During the time of bringing in, due to the chaotic period that the folks encountered and the mix & match culture that they come across and of cos, lots of hearsay, many Upright Culture of Taoism or the Upright Teaching that being passed down by the Ancestors are being distorted or thrown away.

For those who set up Wu Ying and go with the current set of Wu Ying Statues, more or less they know the actual set of Wu Ying, for new Sintuas or Temples that followed the hearsay by the Forefathers, then they will dedicated the Five Statues of Wu Ying on the Altar.

This is one of the most easiest way to differentiate the Accurate and the Made-up set of Wu Ying.

  38. bro... from wad i understand so far, 龍樹王, he is from the 三十六天官,and his name appear in many of the taoist 神咒。if u all interested, u can visit 金福宮 at Jurong West to see the wall painting of the 三十六天官,
it do have 龍樹王. Please advise. thank you

    ReplyDelete
  39. So when you going to impart us your "三壇神兵法" ??? i am waiting for you power power "三壇神兵法"

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wahahahahaha, All these Mantras I have, first thing, do not get bluff by such Mantras, you need to look into the hidden meaning of such Mantras, 2ndly, the background and the origin source of when and where the Mantras are being written.

And last, only who will used the Mantras.

Only by then, you will understand the background of the whole picture.

Today, in our Taoism Society, no one even want to understand the deeper meaning, rather then just recite and then gone with it.. forever that oneself wont be able to learn and see deeper...

This is how sad of why our Chinese Culture is getting declining and gone.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This set of Skills will only be imparted with those who are Officially Accepted and Endorsed disciples and students.

For those who eligible, they are now learning and for those who are yet to get the chance to learn will have to change and seek the Right Mastership from the Right & Upright Masters.

    ReplyDelete
  42. And one thing to add, Long Shu Wang is not part of the 36 Tian Guan.

In Taoism, 36 Tian Guan are being fixed and confirmed far before Long Shu Wang being imported in the Chinese Deity System before Song Dynasty.

    ReplyDelete
  43. oic... So sad for us for not learning Bro Javewu super super power SAN TUA SHEN BING SKILL...So sad

    ReplyDelete
  44. No need to be sad, cos this is not a toy that can pass around like little kids, those who are fated will get from me as they sincerely and faithfully learn from me, all over the World, who have benefit will have benefit by now, those who are just here to joke around and destroying the Peacefulness and Calmness of Taoism will receive the necessary in return in no time.

Like what my Master had advised before he got his enlightenment, if this World is getting chaotic and messy, no matter how precious the Skills are, destroyed it and do not impart it to any Unorthodox Group, maybe what my Master said is true, maybe its time for me to destroy this set of Skills rather than imparted to all those who are not on Upright Path, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  45. How can a super power power skill be destroy
    ???

    ReplyDelete
  46. As simple as making a Sintua to close down.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey Bro Javewu...after reading all the posts above i seriously think that you think too highly of yourself...Don't be too proud now because 一山还比一山高 ... Understand???

    ReplyDelete
  48. wow..... So many comments..... Peace everyone.... and relex....

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes, of cos I know of the theory of 一山还比一山高, whatever I impart here are according to the Upright Taoism, if not, I will rather use my Life to change the outcome.

Hope you can understand, no one can be a Spiritual Cultivated Person unless you are being Officially Accepted by the Upright Taoism, if not, dont talk to me abt 一山还比一山高, cos this only apply to the Upright Culture of our Upright Taoism.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hahahaha, dont worry bro, like what I say, those who are sincere in Learning will benefit, those who are just Joking around, forever, they are just Layman and wont be accepted by the Three Realms.

As everyone knows that, Jave Wu is Jave Wu, wherever I go, I'm still Jave Wu, those who sincerely learn things from me will know that.

All the best to All :P

    ReplyDelete
  51. i agreed what jave had said. learning upright spiritual and taoist skills are no joke. sincering learning it will beneifit oneself and it helps to promote Taosim.

there are people who put in efforts and merits to maintain the whole Taoism system, imparting skills to future generations.
but, there are people who learnt the acture and correct skills and misued it, creating new things to promote oneself.
but i don't meant anybodies, tuas or ppl who posted comments here. in singapore right now, we can still see some tuas are using new created things. that is totally different from other countries Taosim.
let's put in an example, i believed you guys have heard other ppl saying that MaoShan are evil sect. ppl who learnt these skills are not upright. Why? because there are 'some' ppl who learnt it and misuseing it in other ways. i can said, MaoShan skills are not evil. it helps and save ppl.
we came from a well learnt countries, we learn our culture, Taosim, but we must know and learn the root of 道, the meaning behind it. do we just blindly eat fruits when we are told that fruits are very good for human beings? or, do we eat while getting to know the vitamins behind the fruits we eat that benefits us or eating too much will harm our body systems?

it's time that oneself need to think properly, learn and do the correct things for the well being and benefit it to other ppl.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Good Self-realising & well-known on the Taoist Society.

    Keep up the good work.

  53. "Heres a Chinese Paragraph describing the Fa Tan:

    神壇

    神壇末位。以師為神。

    觀正神。念正神。

    存真神。請真神。

    以師力化。迷性眾生。

    神壇者。以師助世。以壇侍神。

    前助諸仙。內助壇民。外助遊孤。"

I think the Shen Tan is wrongly written as Fa Tan.

  54. Hi Shifu, in which category (Dao, Fa or Shen Tan) is LSM actually?
