Pictures of Wen Chang Di Jun (博學才智文昌帝君)

Wen Chang Di Jun aka Wen Chang Xing aka Lord Star Wen Chang, in chinese, we address him as 文昌帝君 or 文昌星.

In Taoism, he's well-known in giving blessings to people who are attending any form of examinations or testings.

Today, in the Taoist Society, there are quite a number of Rituals being practised or performed on Wen Chang's Manifestation Anniversary - Blessing for little kids who going to start their initial schooling or those who are not that good in their studies, etc.

Besides paying respect to Wen Chang, actually Taoists also pay respect to the other 4 Deities that are closely related to Wen Chang, they are:

1) Zhu Yi (朱衣)
2) Kui Xing (魁星)
3) Guan Di (關帝)
4) Lu Dong Bin (呂洞賓)

Officially, these 5 Deities are address as Wu Wen Chang (五文昌).

Tian Long aka Heavenly Deaf, a deaf assistant of Lord Wen Chang

Di Ya aka Earthly Mute, a mute assistant of Lord Wen Chang

  9. Shifu what are the roles of Tianlong and Di Ya? And why are they deaf and mute?

    ReplyDelete
  10. To assist Lord Wen Chang in daily recording and look into academic related issue, besides that, Tian Long Di Ya will also help in sending the Academic Luck Blessing to those who are being granted the blessing from Lord Wen Chang.

Why they are deaf & mute?

According to records, cos they are not supposed to reveal any information on who will get the top scholar for the year or next round, besides that, the wisdom that Lord Wen Chang in-charge of are not allowed to be known by anyone.

In-order not allowing chances of any information-leaking, the assistants of Lord Wen Chang are born like that...

  11. Ah. Its amusing to know this info. Thank you very much shifu.

  15. Shifu, Guan Di is also Guan Gong, right? How is Guan Di related to lord Wenchang? Why do people pray to these (Like Guan Di and Lu Dong Bin) when they cannot give out necessary blessings, only lord Wenchang can do that?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Guan Di is Guan Gong, this is true. This is a form of Respective Addressing Term for Guan Gong by the commoners in-order to remember his credit and loyalty to his own Empire and his sworn Brother Liu Bei.

Why Guan Gong is being transported into the Group of Wen Chang. 1st due to he is well-versed in the Knowledge of War Strategy (keep in mind, not academic, but folks mistaken it for academic) and 2ndly, his knowledge in assisting his subordinates in handling human issues (some sort of Human Resource Skills).

Lv Dong Bin, he is indeed a scholar with good grades in academic, but again, he is out of luck to be selected as Top Scholar in Tang Dynasty and this is why, he end up giving up his luxury life and become a Priest to walk away from the degrading and disappointment that he faced in the Political Society.

Why Wen Chang is able to?

1st, Wen Chang is not a physical character like what you see in here. Wen Chang is a form of Energy that reside in one of the small Stars (which have yet to become a Planet). Every year, this Energy will go 1 round in the Whole Universe. Once the Energy is ready to enter into its manifestation stage, the Energy will somehow burst into Smaller portion of Energy and then manifest into the other Spaces (1 of them is Planet Earth). If a person who had requested for the blessing for good academic result and finally, the person got such a Spiritual Energy (Other space Energy), it will assist the person to somehow open up the Internal hidden Wisdom - which till today, no one can uses Scienctific Solution to answer it.

And this is why, in Taoism, only Wen Chang and Kui Xing are able to give the Blessing.

2ndly, in one of the Dynasty, the Manifestation of the Wen Chang Energy enter into the Mortal Realm with a Larger Portion of Energy which cannot be disperse after entering into the Mortal Realm and so, the Whole portion of the Energy had to enter into a physical womb to be born out as a human and this is the human form of Lord Wen Chang.

  17. Oh, ok. (Here in the Philippines I only see Tu Di Gong, Guan Gong and Mazu temples, I havent seen a temple with Wenchang yet.)

Lord Wenchang and Kuixing are divine non-human beings, does that mean we only need to seek their help (that is, for academic requests, as long as we seek lord Wenchang and Kuixing's help, then no more need to seek help from the other figures like Guan Gong, etc)?

    Thank u shifu!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes, you are right.

In Main Stream Taoism, we only pay respect to Lord Wen Chang or Lord Kui Xing for such academic blessings.

In Taoism, every Deities or Heavenly Beings have their own tasks to perform, so we must look for the right Deity for the right blessings.

  23. sifu, does that means that if i am a teacher, i should pray to Lord Wen Chang and not Lu Tong Bing?

    ReplyDelete
  24. For Official Taoists, for Academic Blessing, we shall honour Wen Chang & Kui Xing.

Why honour Lv Dong Bin? He is just a Priest.

    ReplyDelete
  25. if i am a teacher, the most suitable deity for me to worship is Lord Wen Chang?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yup, thats the Best Choice and can say to be more Official.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Shifu,
As far as I understand your explanation, Guan Gong actually can not give blessings.
So what is actually His Tasks in Daoism, since there are so many temples/rituals honouring him? I am only confused, because it seems he has an important title and position when I read his Baogao 忠孝祖師伏魔大帝關聖帝君.
Can he give protection or something to mortals?

    Thx in advance.

    Warm regards,

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, alot of Temples do honour him, but to be more accurate, in Taoism, we only respect him as an Ancestor. Other than that, no Official Taoists will approach him for Blessing.

Some of the Titles are given to him by the Emperors, even though it seems important, at the end, Guan Gong is still Guan Gong, an Ancestor being honoured due to his Braveness & Loyalty.

  34. I have heard some people say that Wen Yuan Shuai (General Wen) is the military form of Wen Chang. Any truth to that shifu?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dear bro,

That's just a myth. Cos both of them have their own history/background.

In Taoism, Wen Chang is a very important Deity. His position or ranking is much more higher than Wen.
