Pictures of Taoist Protector Er Lang Shen (道教護法二郎神)

Er Lang Shen (二郎神), a Celestial Official Title (道教神名) for Deities who is strongly connected with the element of water & slaying of demons or Negative Entities.

In the whole Chinese Deity System, there are a total of 3 Er Lang Shen.

Each of them is recorded in different era.

Here, I will do some brief introduction on the individual one:

1 – Li Er Lang (李二郎), son of Li Bing (李冰), a Shu General (蜀將) during the Warring Period 戰國時代 (around BC250).

During that era, due to lack of facilities in opening of new farms, directing of new canals, etc. Li Bing and his son Li Er Lang volunteered to assist the commoners in performing the tasks. Soon the tasks were completed.

And in one year in that era, snake demons appeared in the canal where they had opened, in-order to get rid of the disasters, Li Bing and his son Li Er Lang went to the canal side to fight with the snake demons and soon, the demons were subdued.

From then, the commoners respect them as Deities and after they passed-away, the commoners/folks dedicated Temples to them.

In later era, Li Bing was given an Official title of Guang Ji Wang (廣濟王) and his son Li Er Lang with the title of Hui Ling Hou (惠靈侯).

2 – Priest of Mt Qing Cheng Zhao Yu (青城道士趙昱) aka Zhao Zhong Ming (趙仲明), born before Sui Dynasty 隋朝 (AD581 - 618), was once an Area Magistrate Officer.

After seeking Master-ship under Master Li Yu, Zhao Yu went to Mt Qing Cheng to do his self-cultivation.

One year, in Jia State, a gigantic water demon appeared in one of the country side river, upon knowing the existing of such a demon, Zhao Yu came out from Mt Qing Cheng to Jia State to do the slaying of the demon.

After several rounds of battling with the demon, Zhao Yu managed to subdue the demon.

From then, the folks dedicated a temple to him near to the mouth of the river, which later the folks addressed him as Guan Kou Er Lang Shen Zhao Yu (灌口二郎神趙昱)

Now in China Si Chuan Province (四川省), you are still able to find the temple dedicated to Guan Kou Er Lang Shen.

3 – Er Lang Shen Yang Jian (二郎神楊戩).

This is a newly known Deity after the classic Feng Shen Bang (封神榜) appeared during the Late Ming Dynasty (晚明年間).

In Feng Shen Bang, he was known as the Leading person of Mt Mei (梅山首領), which later subdued the 6 demons to be his assistants – later people addressed them as Mei Shan Qi Sheng (梅山七聖).

In some myths, Yang Jian was known as the nephew of Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝之姪).

So what’s the features of Er Lang Shen?

Here’s the feature to spot a Er Lang Shen:

1 – a white face or normal face with 3 eyes

2 – carrying a Three Pointed Headed Spear

3 – a black dog

4 – one hand having the Formation of Sword Fingers Gesture

Till today, a lot of folks still cant differentiate Er Lang Shen and Hua Guang, so in the future, when you are looking for Er Lang Shen, remember to look out for the above mentioned features.

  2. Shi Fu.....is there a Praise Mantra Bao Gao for him......is he is God at the Sin Ming Temple?? thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Due to Er Lang Shen got a few versions, so there's a no standard Bao Gao for him.

In Sin Ming, that one is dedicated to Hua Guang, not Er Lang Shen.

  4. Bao Gao is a Spiritual Mantra in Taoism, not Bao Gong.

  5. he is the general for west camp right , how he get his dog .

    ReplyDelete
  6. In myth and some folks context, yes, he's the leading person in the West Camp.

As for the dog, it's actually a demon that he subdued during the Shang Dynasty.

  7. jave,
but sin ming temple got dog beside him....so is he er lang or hwa guang ?

    ReplyDelete
  8. That Temple is dedicated to Hua Guang, but the statue that the temple got is not accurate.

In order to differentiate who is Hua Guang and who is Er Lang, we can also look into the assistants they have.

Qian Li & Shun Feng will only accompany Hua Guang.

  9. i got see hua guang and er lang shen mixed kim simb4. which is got three eyes, got the same weapon, got one golden pyramid or one golden block, got one dog. ha

  10. tt temple got qian li shu feng but also got dog....
    but no eagles / birds

    ReplyDelete
  11. This is the trend now, all rojak.. this is why, alot of people got mix-up.. but i did see some temples do follow the correct practises.

Usually Cantonese Temples will have the correct form for Hua Guang.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thats why I said, they do not have the accurate form of Hua Guang.

If the dog can be removed and the Spear change to sword, then it will be a perfect statue in a perfect temple.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No eagle, is fire crow.

Till today, only in China, some temples that dedicate to Hua Guang got the fire crows around, in other part of Asia, hav yet to see such crows being included.

  14. Shi Fu....wow! what a big letdown for Taoism..........Hua Guang Ma Tian Jun being mix-up with Er Lang Shen at Sin Ming Temple????????? I guess the Temple caretaker is also unaware of..
Another one: what is the difference between Invitation Mantra vs Praise Mantra Bao Gao??

    ReplyDelete
  15. Invitation Mantra is a form of Mantra that used to doing direct Invitation of the Deities to come into this Mortal World for certain issues or reasons.

Whereas Praise Mantra Bao Gao is a form of Mantra used to Praise the Deities and also for one self to stay in connection with the Deities. In Rituals/Ceremonies, Bao Gao is also a form of Mantra that used to evoke the energies of the Deities to come into the Mortal World.

  16. As long as it follow the Upright Teaching of Taoism and the Culture is being promoted correctly, thats the most Powerful.

  17. tt means u nv do ur properly
u nv go sin ming temple there to tell them

    ReplyDelete
  18. hahahaha, how u know I dint tell them?

The group of Resident Priests belong to the Hainanese Clan, and some of them do know who I am.

Too bad, in Singapore, in order to bring in the Upright Culture, the existing Culture must be totally sweep off 1st, if not, now best you put in your effort, they will still be another group of people doing opposing work.

  30. Hua Guang is consider as a Protector Patron for Cantonese Clan, this was strongly being influence by the Cantonese Opera Troupes.

Since then, Hua Guang became the 1st choice when Cantoneses think of Deity for getting rid of Negative Entities.

    ReplyDelete
  31. umm. I have just gotten the Cantonese opera on Er Lang Diety... I know it will be more just a tale than the true fact... but then, who could resist a lovely tale. :-)

  34. Is there a meaning to the number five in regards to the celestial dog. There is a lion dance puzzle that is called Celestial dog Accepts a Life of Ease. Some of the props has a wooden bench to represent the dog and 5 tangerines repreesnts are placed on top of the bench. What would be the meaning of the five tangerines?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thats refer to Lion Dance Culture, not in Taoism. You will need to engage a Lion Dance Senior or Elder to clarify on that issue.
