He Bi Shan Temple – Distributing Lord Tian Guan Prosperity Rice on Jing Zhe Day (新加坡何碧山宮驚螫日分發天官大帝祈福百家米)

This Year, 2011 aka Xin Mao Year (辛卯年), He Bi Shan Temple (新加坡何碧山宮) had conducted a very Rare and Special Ritual dedicating to Shang Yuan Festival (上元) and also, the Honouring of Heavenly Lord Tian Guan (天官大帝).

One of the Major Event for this Year was – Collecting of the Prosperity Rice from different Families and after then, this Prosperity Rice will be distributed to ALL Devotees and the Neighbour-hoods on this coming Sunday – which is Jing Zhe Day (驚螫日), 2nd Day of Lunar 2 Month (農曆二月初二日) for a the Blessing of Prosperity and also, for Kids who are facing some Child-illnesses issues.

He Bi Shan Temple had prepared and packed a total of 200over Packets for Distribution and for the whole Day, there will be Porridge prepared from the Prosperity Rice for everyone.

This Collecting of Prosperity Rice was actual a Practise that being evolved from the Collecting of Five-bushes Rice (五斗米) by Heavenly Master Zhang Dao Ling (張祖天師) in the Han Dynasty (漢朝年間).

During the Han Dynasty, while the Taoists engaged Heavenly Master for Blessing on the San Yuan Festivals (三元日) or Curing of Illnesses, the Taoists would need to contribute a total of Five Bushes of Rice to Heavenly Master Zhang – which later, the Rice will be distributed to the Poor or Needys.

Besides that, there were also sayings that, for those who consumed the Prosperity Rice collected on the San Yuan Festivals, Oneself’s Sins & Debts will be Eliminated (赦罪解厄) and Prosperity will be Bestowed upon the Person (並賜福).

With strong belief in Promoting Heavenly Master’s Teaching and Continuing of Taoist Culture, this Year, He Bi Shan Temple had decided to follow the Teaching of Heavenly Master – by collecting the Prosperity Rice and then Blessed it and distribute it out to the Public, hoping that Everyone staying in the Area will be Blessed.

The Official Dipper Lamp Formation for the Star Lords (中天斗府消災延壽燈)

Thanks to Ruihe for introducing Jave to this Wonderful Religious Organisation, in-order to see the Wonderful and Superb Set-up dedicated to Dou Mu Yuan Jun (斗姆元君).

In this Wonderful Venue, it was Great to see that, the Members had set-up an Official Dipper Lamp dedicating to Dou Mu Yuan Jun and the Nine Emperors aka Star Lords (北斗九皇星君).

After staying in the Venue for a while, Oneself could really sense the Strong Vibration emitted out from the Dou Mu Altar.

Just before we left the Venue, Ruihe saw the changes in the Incenses that we Offered to Dou Mu Yuan Jun, the length and the ashes started to change to some interesting shape and so, Ruihe decided to take some pictures of it.

What a Great Place to honour Dou Mu Yuan Jun.

PS: It’s a bit pity that this Religious Organisation does not open-up to Public for Honouring.

8th Day of Lunar 1st Month – Descending of All Star Lords (農曆正月初八-眾星君下降日)

According to Taoist Contexts, 8th Day of Lunar 1st Month (農曆正月初八) is the Day that All Star Lords aka Xing Jun (眾星君下降日) descending down into the Mortal Realm to conduct Inspections and also, Cleansing of the Surrounding.

On this Day, Taoists or Chinese will conduct a Simple but yet Official Ritual for the Ushering in of the Star Lords and also, to perform the Requesting of Good Luck and Health for Oneself or the Parent.

According to the Records, on this Day, 2 Pictures or Scrolls must be prepared:

1) Picture of All Star Lords, especially the 28 Constellation Star Lords (廿八星宿)
2) Picture of Star Lord Bei Dou aka The Great Dipper Group (北斗七元君)

After the Pictures or Scrolls are prepared, a Temporary Altar must be placed at an Open Area facing the North or North-west (供桌面北方或西北方).

Once the Sun set, 49 or 108 Lamps (四十九盏或一百零八盏油燈) must be Light-up (in the past, People used small saucers containing Oil to act as Lamp) and 3 bowls of Sweet Dumplings (三碗湯圓) & 9 cups of Chinese Tea (九杯清茶) must be offered to the Star Lords.

After the Lamps are being light-up, 9 or 12 Incenses (九或十二支清香) will be Lighted and Reports will be made facing North.

Once the Incenses are offered, 15-30 minutes rest and then All the Lamps are to be Put-off and the Pictures or Scrolls and Incenses must be Burnt-off.

Upon completion of the Burning, the Altar must be cleared off and the Sweet Dumplings must be consumed.

The whole of this Ritual is known as Shun Xing (順星) aka The Aligning with the Celestial Stars or Honouring & Ushering in the Stars for Bestowing of Luck & Health (祭星/接星).

As for Shun Xing Ritual, which later in the Taoist History, it became a Major Ritual for Taoist School, known as Shun Xing Li Dou Ke Yi (順星禮斗科儀), meaning Aligning with the Celestial Stars and Honouring the Great Dipper for Eliminating of Negative Issues and Gaining of Luck & Health Blessing.

In the attachment is the 2 Combination Pictures of The Star Lords. For those who are interested in conducting this Ritual, you may wish to download it and use it during the Honouring.

Hokkien Culture for Honouring Yu Huang – Walking Thru the Sugar-cane Gate (閩南天公誕習俗-過甘蔗門)

Rating:★★★
Category:Other

In here, Jave will like to share with ALL of you another Traditional Practise/Custom of the Hokkien Clan while the Hokkiens honoured Yu Huang Da Tian Zun (玉皇大天尊) aka Tian Gong (天公) on the 9th Day of Lunar 1st Month (農曆正月初九日).

Due to partially that, Hokkiens were being rescued by Yu Huang during the Late Ming Dynasty (明朝末年) in a Sugar-cane Plantation (甘蔗園), from then, the Hokkiens had been using Sugar Cane as a form of Great Offering dedicating to Yu Huang (供奉甘蔗為上等大禮), for reminding Oneself the Gratitude of Yu Huang and also to keep Oneself in mind that, as a Chinese, we shall Remember All the Assistances that other People had provided for Oneself. In Chinese, this is known as Yin Shui Si Yuan (飲水思源).

This very Traditional and Rare Practise/Custom is known as Walking Thru the Sugar-cane Gate (過甘蔗門) or in some other Records known as Walking Thru the Sugar-cane Garden (行甘蔗園/林).

How this Practise/Custom gets going?

Usually this Practise/Custom will be carried out during the Honouring of Yu Huang during the 9th Day of Lunar 1st Month Morning, can be at Home or in Temple.

It just needed the following items:

1) A Pair of 9feet Sugar-cane with roots and the Sugar-canes must be Fresh & not dried-up
2) 3-5 Pairs of Huang Gao Qian (黃高錢三至五對)
3) 3feet of Red-ribbon (三尺紅綢帶)
4) 1feet of Red-paper cut into 5cm in height and 18cm in length (一尺紅紙條)

Once ready, Bundled the 3-5 Pairs of Huang Gao Qian together, each bundle having 3-5 strings of Huang Gao Qian, then hang the Huang Gao Qian on each Sugar-cane (see Point One).

After that, paste the Red-paper cutting onto each Joint of the Sugar-cane’s Stem (see Point Two).

Last of All, Tied the 2 Sugar-cane together with the Red-ribbon, at the Tip of the Sugar-canes’ Leaves and make it into a Semi-circle Form – just like a Door (see Point Three).

Once the 2 Sugar-canes are being Tied together, place them in front of the Honouring Altar – at least 5feey from the Altar (see Point Four).

Upon completion on the Set-up, everyone in the Family can prepare to make the First Round of Offering of Incenses to Yu Huang (usually will go Three Rounds before Sending-off the Paper-offerings).

After the Second round of Offering of Incenses, everyone in the Family must change to Blue Clothing (藍上衣) & Brown/Black Pants (黑/褐褲). And then, each holding on to 2 White Buns aka Mantou (饅頭).

Before the Third Round of Offering of Incenses, everyone will hold on to the Mantou and Walk Thru the Sugar-cane Gate (Guys will lead 1st and followed by the Women 男先女后) and after returning, the Mantou must be placed on the Red-plate on the Honouring Altar (see Point Five) and everyone had to change back to their Clothing for the Honouring (usually New or Red Clothing). For those who are not able to get Blue-clothing, can use Blue Cloth to tie on the Waist to represent Blue Clothing.

Once the Changing is Done, the Third Round of Offering of Incenses will be conducted and last, the Eldest Member of the Family will lead the Sending-off of the Paper-offerings.

So what is the Main Purpose of this Walking Thru of Sugar-cane Gate (過甘蔗門涵義)?

There are a few meanings:

1) To get rid of All Negative Issues of the Past 12 Months (Walking Thru the Gate)
行過甘蔗門﹐除去過去一年中的一切不如意事

2) To remember the Hardship that our Ancestors had encountered during the Late Ming Dynasty (Wearing Blue Clothing and Black/Brown Pants)
穿藍衣黑褐褲﹐謹記祖先一切教誨/辛勞

3) To get rid of Poverty and Usher in the Good Wealth (Changing Back to New or Red Clothing)
脫去藍衣黑褐褲﹐重新換上新裝﹐是卸去壞運迎接好運

4) Thanking Heaven for giving us a Chance to Live on this World again (The White Buns aka Mantou that we hold on hands while Walking Thru the Gate)
手持饅頭過門﹐感謝上天體恤下民

In Summary

This Practise/Custom may seems a bit Complicated or having Bad-omen (due to the Clothing colour), but this is Fact that what our Ancestors had faced in the past.

Today, we are able to live so comfortably at Home, enjoying the Fruits that our Ancestors had “planted” for us, did we really appreciate what they had given to us?

By going thru such a Practise/Custom, actually it is to remind us or assist us in Deeply-casting-a-mark in our Mind to tell us that, we must Appreciate and show more Concern & Care for the others.

Do not get to bother over little things, when time to put down, lets put down. Our Ancestors can do it, so can We.

Last of All, Treasure what we have now, don’t regret after we lost it.

7th Day of Lunar 1St Month – Ren Ri aka Human-kind Day (農曆正月初七人日)

7th Day of Lunar 1st Month (農曆正月初七), the Day that Empress Nv Wa (女媧娘娘) descended into this Mortal Realm to create Human-kind, making Men out from Soil (泥土造男) and Women from Water (泥水造女) - (approx time period: 400-5000, 000 years ago).

In Chinese Culture, this Day is known as Ren Ri (人日) aka Human-kind Day, it’s the Birthday of All “Human”.

Few Decades ago, in Singapore, the 4 Famous Cantonese Chefs created a Lunar New Year Dish known as Qi Cai Lao Qi Yu Sheng (七彩撈起魚生 – See Picture below) accordingly to the Culture of the consuming of the Qi Cai Geng. Till Today, during Lunar New Year period, this Dish became a MUST-eat dish for Chinese.

In Singapore, besides eating of the Lao Qi Yu Sheng, Chinese & Taoists will also go to Temples to pay Respect to “Mother of ALL Human-kind” Nv Wa Niang Niang. The most Biggest & Oldest Nv Wa, was in being honoured in Telok Blangah Tian Gong Temple (天公廟), situated beside Block 45.
