癸巳蛇年送寒衣懷思之期 Offering of Winter Clothing to the Wanderings 2013

In Taoist Culture, there are 3 Major Days for the Taoists to show their Filial Piety, Gratitude and Thanksgiving to the Ancestors/Pass-on Members and also, to perform a Minor Concern to the Wanderings or Un-attended Souls. These 3 Major Days in Taoist Culture is known as The Three Gratitude Days for the Souls or San Da Ming Jie in Chinese (三大冥節).

So which are the 3 Days?

There are,

1 – Qing Ming Period aka The Tomb-sweeping Festival (清明節)
2 – The Seventh Month Celebration aka Zhong Yuan Festival (中元節)
3 – The Offering of Winter-clothing Day aka Han Yi Day (寒衣節)

For Qing Ming Period, usually it will falls in the Lunar 2 Month till Lunar 3 Month, whereas the Seventh Month Celebration will starts on the 1st Day till the Last Day of Lunar 7 Month.

And so, when is the Date for Winter-clothing Offering?

It actually falls on the 1st Day of Lunar 10 Month and this is why, in the Ancient Chinese Records, it is also known as Shi Yue Shuo Jie (十月朔節), meaning the Starting of the Lunar 10 Month or the starting of the Winter Season.

For Year 2013, it falls on 03 Nov, a Sunday.

So how was this Offering of Winter Clothing being carried-out in the Ancient China?

According to the Ancient Records, the Offering of Winter Clothing are being categorised into 2 types,

1 – Home-based Offering (家中祭奠)
2 – Official/Governmental Offering (公眾祭奠)

For Home-based Offering, Descendants/Family Members must prepared the necessary Offerings (as below) for the Honouring of the Pass-on Members at Home or at the Graves,

1 – Incenses & Candles (香燭)
2 – Paper Offerings (including the Paper-bag of Winter-clothing 紙料/寒衣包袱)
3 – Scriptures (or engaged Taoist Masters for the Chanting 經懺)
4 – Seven Cooked Dishes (七道熟食)
5 – One bowl of Soup (湯料一碗)
6 – The Three Sacrificed Meat Offerings (Pig, Fish, Chicken/Duck 三牲)
7 – Cooked Rice (米飯)
8 – Wine/Chinese Tea (茶酒)
9 – Four sets of Bowls/Spoons/Chop-sticks (四副碗筷)

Once after All the Offerings are being prepared and placed in order on the Altar, the whole Family has to make 3 Kowtows to the Ancestors and after 3 rounds of Offering of Wine & Tea, the Burning-off of the Paper-offerings and Winter-clothing will be done. On the Paper-bag of Winter-clothing, the Names of Three Generations Ancestors will be indicated – meaning, Father, Grandfather & Great-grandfather (寒衣包袱之上書有祖上三代名諱).

After the Honouring of Ancestors, the Family Members will then gathered a bowl of Rice and some dishes from the Ancestor Honouring and then throw the bowl of Rice and the dishes onto the Main Road or at some Grass-areas nearby the House, this is to Offer the Food to the nearby Wanderings. For some Families, they will also burn some Paper-offerings at the Road-side, hoping that, after the Wanderings got the Offerings, they will “Blessed” on the People staying in the area. In Taoism, this is known as Ji Gu (濟孤).

For Official/Governmental Offering, this is usually being carried-out by the Area Officers or Magistrate Office (地方官/知縣/等) – The Offering reaches Peak in Ming Dynasty.

In the Morning of the 1st Day of Lunar 10 Month (農曆十月初一日早晨), the Officer will arrived at the Temple dedicated to Lord Cheng Huang aka City Deity (城隍尊神) and made a report on the Objective of the Day’s Event and then, the Constables (衙差) will shift the statue of Lord Cheng Huang onto a prepared Sedan-chair and on the Sedan Chair (大紅轎), there are 1 or 2 plaque(s) with the words written on it – Feng Zhi Si Gu (匾書有 - 奉旨祀孤), meaning this Offerings to the Wanderings is being Authorised and Granted by the Emperor. In Ming Dynasty (明朝), The Lunar 10 Month Procession of Lord Cheng Huang is also known as Fang Gui Shou Ji Ri (放鬼受濟日), meaning Releasing of Souls for Salvation.

Once the statue of Lord Cheng Huang is being invited on the Sedan-chair and secured firmly, the Officer will lead the way and starts the Procession of going round the whole Village/Town/City (遊境濟孤).

During the Procession, the Officer will stop at certain areas/corners and ordered the Constables to burn some Paper-offerings, this is to show the “Concern” for those un-attended Souls or Suffering Wanderings in the Area. By doing so, the Officer hopes that the Wanderings will not disturb the Mortals living in the Area.

After the whole Procession was done, the Officer will lead the Sedan-chair back to the Temple and ushered Lord Cheng Huang back onto the Altar and on the very night, simple Dinner will be held at the Area/Village/City for the People staying around, this is to celebrate that Harvesting had completed and a Year is about to end.

In Summary

Due to lost of Interest in Chinese Culture, lost of Recognition in Root-Culture and the Down-fall of Taoist Culture, many such Traditional Practices are gone or being forgotten by a lot of the Taoists/Chinese.

Is Oneself doing it for Fun?
Is this Culture important to Oneself/Us?

I think this is something that worth many of us to sit down and ponder over it.

癸巳蛇年南極長生大帝下降之期 Heavenly Emperor Chang Sheng Descending Day 2013

農曆九月廿五日為南極長生大帝下降拔度九幽一切苦靈並為眾生解厄之日。

南極太薇長生大帝又稱高上神霄玉清真王﹐相傳為元始天王第九位兒子﹐名為畢方。

在一般記載中﹐南極長生大帝又被公認為”壽星”﹐能為一切眾生添壽延年﹐就因如此﹐南極長生大帝常顯”老人相”。

25th Day of Lunar 9 Month is known as the Descending Day of Heavenly Emperor Chang Sheng, the 9th Son of Great Supreme Lord Yuan Shi.

On the descending day, Emperor Chang Sheng will conduct his Salvation task on the Suffering Soul and also, to Eliminate the Sins of those Poor Beings.

For Year 213, it falls on 29 Oct, a Tuesday.

癸巳蛇年六十四代張源先天師得道紀念日 Immortality Attaining Anniversary of 64th Heavenly Master Zhang Yuan Xian 2013

農曆九月十九日為正一六十四代張源先大真人之得道紀念日。

On this coming 19th Day of Lunar 9 Month (農曆九月十九日), it will be the Attaining-of-Immortal-hood Anniversary of the 64th Generation Heavenly Master Zhang Yuan Xian (六十四代張源先天師).

In Year 2013, it falls on 23 Oct, a Wednesday.

Heavenly Master Zhang Yuan Xian got his Immortal-hood in Year 2008 at the age of 78, leaving his Wife & Daughter to take over the supervision of Zheng Yi Sect.

以下是小道弟子 - 余羅豪﹐所寫的一篇文章。

在此上貼與各方好友一起分享。

 

俗話說「行千裡路，勝讀萬卷書」，意思就是說若要了解一件事，單靠書是沒用的。我們得走出門外親自體驗才能增廣見聞。

 今年的「九皇大帝」聖誕 慶祝活動，使我有這個機會大開眼界。

 我到了四個不同的地方，見識了不同的九皇大帝慶祝活動。看了又看，想了又想，我冒然問了幾位信眾關於「九皇大帝」的由來。他們所能告訴我的事，'上網找就有了'，'總的來說要吃齋，保持乾淨'，'有很多說法'，'都是以前留下來的' 等等。

 如果要追根究底，「九皇大帝」的由來是「北斗九皇大道君」。他們又是誰呢？據我說知，北斗乃掌管凡人的壽命。古時候人們非常敬仰北斗星，甚至被視為不可忽視的一組星君。北斗經裡說道，北斗星君能解廿四種厄。

大聖北斗七元君。能解三災厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解四殺厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解五行厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解六害厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解七傷厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解八難厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解九星厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解夫妻厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解男女厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解產生厄。
大聖北斗七元君。能解復運厄。

自所以人們非常敬仰北斗眾星君。因為北斗星君造福人間，所以廣受人間敬仰。
哪北斗九皇大星君是誰呢？

北斗第一天樞宮。陽明貪狼太星君。
北斗第二天璇宮。陰精巨門元星君。
北斗第三天璣宮。真人祿存貞星君。
北斗第四天權宮。玄冥文曲紐星君。
北斗第五天衡宮。丹元簾貞罡星君。
北斗第六凱陽宮。北極武曲紀星君。
北斗第七瑤光宮。天衝破軍關星君。
北斗第八洞明宮。天蓬元帥外輔星君。
北斗第九隱光宮。天䣭元帥內弼星君。

第八和第九星是兩顆是肉眼看不見的星。

除了為人間解厄，還有什麼讓人們崇拜呢？因為北斗經提到了很多利益。

家有北斗經。本命降真靈。
家有北斗經。宅捨得安寜。
家有北斗經。父母保長生。
家有北斗經。諸厭化爲塵。
家有北斗經。萬邪自歸正。
家有北斗經。營業得稱情。
家有北斗經。闔門自康健。
家有北斗經。子孫保榮勝。
家有北斗經。五路自通達。
家有北斗經。眾惡永消滅。
家有北斗經。六畜保興生。
家有北斗經。疾病保痊癒。
家有北斗經。財物不虛耗。
家有北斗經。横事永不起。
家有北斗經。常保亨利貞。
禮斗添福壽。天下永太平。

可見北斗星是多麼的重要。可惜的是在我們南洋這代，了解北斗星君的人不多。眾多的「九皇大帝」信眾多數都不了解他們自己在做什麼。再加上民間的種種不同的傳說，以把古時後的北斗信仰改寫了。這類似我今年的農曆七月體驗有個相同點，民間的傳說改變了很多道教的真正意思。人們一定要會懂得分變民間傳說和道教傳統，這樣一來，道教才能在南洋這一帶延續下去。

我今年雖然是第一年開始了解道教，我相信還有很多民間與道教的混合等待著我去發現。願「九皇大道君」能指點我的前程。

癸巳蛇年龍神朝玉皇之期 Annual Reporting for Dragon Deities to Celestial Palace 2013

每年的農曆九月(菊月)為三界四海五方九壘諸位龍神回天庭朝見玉皇大天尊之期。

農曆菊月初八日為各部龍神聚集與”天門亭”。

農曆菊月十五日為各部龍神分組覲見玉皇大天尊並上奏該年相關事宜。

農曆菊月十七日為各部龍神回駕之日。

該日﹐民間為了祈求來年風調雨順等﹐會在龍神案前供上清水三碗﹐青竹/竹葉十二支以及白飯三碗。

祭祀後﹐將青竹/竹葉焚化﹐在火即將熄滅時﹐將三碗清水倒於火邊﹐之後將白飯於家人分著吃﹐這樣就能祈求一年豐收﹐三餐溫飽。

Every Year Lunar 9th Month is the Month for the various Dragon Deities in the Three Realms reporting back to the Celestial Palace to do their annual reporting to Jade Emperor of Heaven.

The main Day of the reporting takes place on 15th Day of Lunar 9 Month, which for Year 2013, it falls on 19 Oct, a Saturday.

On this Day, the Taoists/Chinese will prepare 3 bowls of Clean Water, 12 sticks of Bamboos/Bamboo Leaves and 3 bowls of cooked rice.

After the honouring, the Bamboos will be burnt and before the fire goes off, the water will be sprinkle around the fire. Upon completion, the rice will be distributed among the family members for consuming.

This practise is to request for Good Harvesting and Prosperity Blessing.

癸巳蛇年正一五十一代張顯庸天師聖誕吉慶 Manifestation Anniversary of 51st Heavenly Master Zhang Xian Yong 2013

 農曆九月十三日為正一五十一代張顯庸天師大真人之聖誕。

張顯庸天師﹐又名張九功﹐後明神宗又賜名張顯祖。

顯庸天師生于明萬歷十年九月十三日﹐沖舉得道於清順治十八年八月初五日﹐享壽八十。

一生著作有”三教同途論”﹐”金丹辯惑”及”浴梧詩集”。

其賜號為” 光扬祖范冲和清素真人”。

13th Day of Lunar 9 Month is known as the Manifestation Anniversary of the 51st Heavenly Master Zhang Xian Yong.

For Year 2013, it falls on 17 Oct, a Thursday.

菊月朝禮斗府星君儀式圓滿落幕 Rounding Off the Lunar 9th Month Celebration

癸巳蛇年農曆九月慶典總算告一段落。

每年的這段時間﹐本門可以說是"忙上加忙"﹐除了辦理新弟子入門儀式﹐舉行本門開山紀念慶﹐為老天師舉行祝壽禮﹐以及為斗府諸真列聖舉行朝禮法會。

正一歷代掌教天師大真人寶誥內有記載 - "躬居寶笈。代斗姥以演真。"及本門戒規也有提到 - "以斗姆為尊﹐北斗為輔。"

就因此﹐小道不敢忘記這些教誨﹐繼續傳承正一朝禮斗尊之文化並遵照本門祖上遺訓﹐希望代代相傳﹐正一道教文化也能不期限的發揚光大。

六十三代老天師真人聖誕吉慶 The Anniversary of the 63rd Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu

仙鶴逍遙。天人撫琴。
恩德被世。溥覃眾生。
菊月初五。道生臨世。
正一嗣教。天師真人。

每年的農曆九月初五日這天﹐不管小道有多忙﹐都不敢忘記這天的一向重要任務﹐就是設立六十三代天師大真人之聖位﹐並獻供上敬以答謝老天師對本門施之與的大恩德。

今年自然也不例外。

本門於亥時末﹐便開始恭迎老天師之聖駕並禮拜"天師寶懺"。

願老天師降佑﹐護所有正一門下子弟﹐興道順利﹐道務常興。

Manifestation Anniversary of 63rd Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu 2013 (癸巳蛇年正一六十三代張恩溥天師聖誕吉慶)

農曆九月初五日為正一六十三代天師張恩溥大真人之聖誕。

63rd Generation Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu, born in Year 1906, on the 05th Day of Lunar 9 Month and got Immortal-hood in Year 1969.

Other names of Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu - Zhang He Qin (張鹤琴) or Zhang Rui Ling (張瑞龄).

Heavenly Master Lineage Taoist Name known as Dao Sheng (道生).

In Year 1948, Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu and his Family stayed in Singapore for a short period before migrating to Taiwan.

December 1949, Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu and his Family migrated to Taiwan and from then, Zheng Yi Sect settled it's Root in Taiwan.

Year 1964, Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu visited various Countries in South East Asia. This time round, he was traveling around to do the Initiation for Taoist Priests & Official Taoists.

25 Dec 1969, due to over-work and stress, Heavenly Master Zhang En Pu got his Immortal-hood after returning from Philippines.

斗府星君文化分享之廿一﹕道祖傳授張祖天師五斗經訣 Sharing on the Dipper Lords Culture 21 –Supreme Lord Dao De imparting the Dipper Scriptures to Heavenly Master Zhang

據宋朝”太上老君歷世應化圖”(或” 太上老君八十一化圖”)之”第六十二化”記載﹐太上道祖於漢永壽元年農曆二月初七日(北斗經記載為正月初七日)﹐分身下降蜀都(即今日四川)﹐傳授” 北斗經訣”與張祖道陵天師。而在漢永壽元年該月十五日﹐分身下降傳授”南斗妙經”。

在漢永壽二年(又記載元年)正月初七日﹐太上道祖分身下降傳授”東斗妙經”﹐ 正月十五日傳授”西斗妙經”及農曆六月十五日傳授”中斗妙經”。

According to the Song Dynasty Taoist Text on the 81 Manifestations of Supreme Lord Dao De, during Han Dynasty Yong Shou Period 1st Year, Lord Dao De descended into Sichuan Province to impart the Bei Dou Scripture Skills to Heavenly Master Zhang Dao Ling.

From there, Heavenly Master Zhang had used this Scripture to promote the Official Taoist Culture and Teaching to all Taoist Followers.

Till today, it is still an Important Taoist Scripture that ALL Taoists needed to chant and understand.

斗府星君文化分享之二十﹕太陰太陽星君神咒 Sharing on the Dipper Lords Culture 20 –The Incantation of the Lords of the Sun & Moon

於此﹐與各方同道好友分享” 太陰太陽星君神咒”。

此二咒是摘取於”唐朝道門科範大全集”。

太陰太陽二星君(真君)﹐各司全”大道”之中的三十六太陽及七十二月亮之運行及變化。

因世間之人鈍愚﹐常以為太陰太陽二星君就”居”於太陽及月亮之內﹐因此恥笑”中華文化”為迷信及迂腐﹐實為可悲。其實此等之人才真正為愚痴。何為﹖因為在世間還未有科學之前﹐道教經典及文獻已有著很多的記錄﹐這些記錄都大約有提到這個宇宙之內﹐有無數的太陽及月亮在運行﹐可見道教文化有多先進。

今年﹐宇宙學者也開始認同我們所”寄居”的宇宙只是”大宇宙”中的一個”小宇宙”﹐這恰恰符合了我們道教中的”大道之內﹐包涵小道”。

In here, you all will be seeing the individual Bao Gao (寶誥) dedicated to the in
dividual Star Lord of the Nine Emperor of the Great Northern Dipper Group (北斗九皇星君).

In the following is the brief introduction on the Nine Emperors:

Bei Dou Xing Jun (消災七元北斗星君) aka Lord Bei Dou, Bei Dou Qi Yuan Xing Jun (北斗七元星君) or The Nine Emperors of the Northern Hemisphere (九皇星君大天尊).

In Taoism, besides Lord Emperor Chang Sheng Da Di (南極長生大帝) and Lord Nan Dou (延壽六司南斗星君), Bei Dou Xing Jun are the Deities that one self can pay respect to for prolonging of one's life, delaying of the death period
a
nd eliminating of one’s debts & sins (延生, 消災﹐注死).

Since our Heavenly Master Zhang Dao Ling (張天師) started his promoting of Taoism, Lord Bei Dou was one of the important Deities that Taoists must pay respect to and because in Taoism, we were a Religion & a form of Teaching that greatly depended on the movement of Stars, Lord Bei Dou was then being highly respected by All Schools, Sects and Taoists (due to the Centered Position of where Lord Bei Dou was being located).

Together with Lord Zuo Fu (左輔) & Lord You Bi (右弼), Lord Bei Dou formed the Nine Emperors Group which was believed to be the 9 sons of Dou Mu Yuan Jun (斗姆元君).

In some contexts, Lord Bei Dou was also being recognized as the Star Lord that being appointed to look after the Element of Water (水行). And so, in some of our Taoist Mantras that associated with the Element of Water, Lord Bei Dou would be mentioned, etc.

As mentioned earlier, due to the position of Lord Bei Dou in the Universe, Lord Bei Dou was being highly respected by Taoists and all Taoist Sects. And because of him position, he was also being appointed by the San Qing (三清道祖) aka The Three Pure One to assist Jade Emperor (玉皇大天尊) in controlling the movements of the Sun, Moon and the Five Important Planets in the Universe (Pluto, Mercury, Mars, Venus & Saturn) – these 7 Planets are being addressed as Qi Zheng (七政) in Religious Contexts.

In Taoist Rituals/Ceremonies, Li Dou (禮斗) or Bai Dou (拜斗) is one of the many Rituals/Ceremonies that is being dedicated to Lord Bei Dou and the other Star Lord Groups.

During the Li Dou or Bai Dou Ritual/Ceremony, the Leading Priest will evoke the energies from Dou Mu Yuan Jun, Lord Emperor Zi Wei (北極紫微大帝), Lord Emperor Tian Huang (西極天皇大帝) and the Nine Stars to be emitted in-order to bless onto the devotees who joined in the Rituals/Ceremonies.

Usually after the evoking of the energies, names of the devotees will be recited to all the Deities that being evoked in-order for them to give the necessary blessings.

In Taoism, once oneself is being claimed that the life-span is going to end soon, by doing a Petition Report to Lord Bei Dou and by placing the 7-Stars Lamp Formation (七星延生燈法), oneself's life-span will somehow be prolonged (according to the merits and cultivation of the oneself, etc).

So who are the 7 Stars in the Lord Bei Dou Group?

中天大聖北斗九皇賜福大道君諱字﹐相信很多同道好友應該不陌生但對於九皇星君夫人諱字﹐就較為少見了。

此九皇星君夫人諱字收錄於隋朝” 天微儀象秘要”之內﹐後在宋朝由蘇頌重新整理為” 新儀象法要”。

在農曆九月大型禮斗法會﹐此組諱字的使用是少不了的。

In here, you all will be seeing a group of Taoist Secret Characters dedicated to the Nine Madam Concubines of the Nine Star Lords of the Great Northern Dipper.

Which till now, many Taoists have yet to know or use them.

This Group of Characters is used during the Lunar 9th Month Celebration for the Honouring of the Nine Emperors, besides this Group, the Characters of Souther Dipper, General Qin Yang Tuo Luo, Lord San Guan will also be used.

道教之中﹐有陽必然有陰﹐這是很自然的。

與其”丈夫”們相同﹐在”宇宙大爆炸”後﹐由”無”至”太虛”中的”玄諳(讀暗/印)”為九皇星君夫人所”取”的名諱。

這些名諱是收錄於由東晉南朝黃琳道人所著(整理)的” 太上飛行九晨玉經(或稱太上迥元九道飛行羽經)”之中。

While everyone is busily preparing for the arrival of the Ninth Month Festival that dedicated to Dou Mu Yuan Jun (中天大聖九天大羅斗姆元君) aka Mother of All Dippers & the Nine Star Emperor Lords of the Great Northern Dipper (北斗九皇賜福星君), in here, I will like to introduce the very Rare & almost unknown Nine Female Deities to all of you.

So who are they?

They are the Nine Wives of the Nine Star Emperor Lords of the Great Northern Dipper, which in Taoism, we addressed them as Jiu Huang Xing Jun Huang Fei Fu Ren (九皇星君皇妃夫人) or literally translated as the Madam Lord Concubine of the Nine Star Emperor Lords.

During Big Official Taoist Celebration, such as the Honouring of Dipper aka Li Dou (禮斗法會) or the Ninth Month Festival (九皇朝期), these Nine Madams will be evoked or “invited” to witness the Rituals/Ceremonies conducted in-order to request Blessing for the Beings in this Mortal Realm.

北斗第五天衡宮。丹元簾貞罡星君。姓上開，名諱變五道。

北斗第六凱陽宮。北極武曲紀星君。姓明靈，名諱昌上元。

北斗第七瑤光宮。天衝破軍關星君。姓玄樞，名諱開天徒。

北斗第八洞明宮。天蓬元帥外輔星君。姓精常，名諱空上開正延。

北斗第九隱光宮。天猷元帥內弼星君。姓幽空，名諱冥陽暉幽寥。

東斗星君﹕姓秦名初字干犯﹐分身下降為吳國人
南斗星君﹕姓唐名鹿字宣道﹐分身下降為太原人
西斗星君﹕姓劉名氣字石嬰﹐分身下降為長安人
北斗星君﹕姓陳名奉字百萬﹐分身下降為江夏人
中斗星君﹕姓周名真字天中﹐分身下降為四川人

這”五斗星君”﹐也就是我們在一般宮廟之中﹐常見到的(一斗一聖相)。

在這”五斗星君”座下﹐還有二司命﹐個別為﹕

斗中左司命﹕姓韓名思字元信﹐分身下降為長洛人
斗中右司命﹕姓張名獲邑字元信﹐分身下降為廣陽人

此二司命總領斗中廿八大將與七十二官員﹐代”五斗星君”行錄簿之職。

韓國文化中的北斗七元星君 Korean's Bei Dou Star Lords

其實在韓國宗教之中﹐北斗七元君佔著很重要的地位。

大多數的韓國宮廟中。皆能看到北斗七元君之畫像/掛軸。

相反的﹐在中華文化中。北斗七元君/九皇大道星﹐就較少出現在宮廟之中。

In Korea, the 7 Star Lords of the Northern Dipper are commonly seen in most of the Temples.
Unlike in Temples of the Chinese, sometime it's really hard to find the existing of them.
